Malcolm-Jamal Warner, 54, best known for his role on ‘The Cosby Show”, tragically died on Sunday, July 20. According to multiple reports, Warner attempted to save his daughter from a dangerous rip current in Costa Rica. According to Elberth León, head of the Tourist Police for Costa Rica’s Atlantic region, both Warner and his daughter were caught in a powerful ocean current while swimming near Playa Grande in Cahuita, Limón.

“Both were dragged by the current,” León said. “They were bathing together and were caught by a rip current. Obviously, as a father, he fought for his daughter, but the current in that area is very strong, and they couldn’t accomplish the objective.”

Debunking reports that Malcolm’s daughter was with him at the time of the accident, the authors share new information.

In a new statement published in People magazine on Thursday, July 24, Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) confirmed new details.

Police clarified that Warner’s daughter was not in the water with him at the time he drowned.

“Mr. Warner was playing with his daughter at the seashore at one point. He then left her out of the water, and he and a friend of his entered the sea,” the statement published in people.

“It was at that moment that they were swept away by the current, and the friend managed to get out,” the statement continued. “However, Mr. Warner was unable to get out and was pulled out by several people on the beach. He received care from Red Cross officials, but was pronounced dead at the scene.”


Warner Was Pulled From the Water Without Vital Signs

León confirmed that Warner was later pulled from the ocean by Red Cross lifeguards and a rescuer from Caribbean Guards. Sadly, he showed no signs of life.

As per People, the Costa Rica Red Cross reported that two adult male patients were treated at the scene. One was transported in critical condition to a local clinic, while CPR was performed on Warner at the beach. He was later pronounced dead. The other person in the hospital has now been discharged, as per the latest reports.


Cause of Death Ruled Accidental Drowning

On Tuesday, July 22, the Costa Rican Judicial Investigation Agency confirmed that Warner’s autopsy had been completed. The official cause of death was listed as “asphyxia due to submersion,” and authorities have ruled it an accidental drowning.


Officials Warn of Dangerous Beach Conditions

Authorities noted that Playa Grande is often marked with red flags due to the frequent and dangerous rip currents in the area.

“We believe it was one of the days with the highest waves and the strongest currents,” León said. “He was at the shore rinsing off sand with the girl. They took a quick dip, and that’s when it happened.”
