And with awards season drawing closer, we’ll be seeing some pretty prestigious films creeping in over the coming weeks, kicking off this week with the latest effort from The Hurt Locker’s Kathryn Bigelow. That one’s in good company among the thrillers, horror flicks, comedies and chilling true crime sagas which make up this week’s global Netflix most-watched top chart. This heartwarming Brazilian drama continues to notch up viewers in the millions, providing a sharp contrast to all the thrills, scares and true crime in the top 10. Caramelo centres around a chef who is dealing with a terminal illness, and a caramel-coloured dog who began life in a cardboard box on the roadside. 6. The Twits – 8,100,000 views

With half-term upon us it’s no surprise to see this animated caper holding steady. Based on the 1980 novel by Roald Dahl, The Twits sees two orphans joining forces with a family of magical animals to save their city from Mr and Mrs Twit, who – in true Dahl fashion – are the meanest, nastiest villains in the world. With a voice cast that includes the likes of Emilia Clarke and Natalie Portman, this is perfect half-term viewing. (Picture: Netflix)

Based on the novel by thriller writer Ruth Ware, Keira Knightley stars as Laura “Lo” Blacklock, a journalist who sees a passenger go overboard on a lavish yacht during an assignment. Except no one believes her, meaning she’s forced to risk her life to uncover the truth. (Picture: Parisa Taghizadeh/Netflix)

The Elixir (or Abadi Nan Jaya, to give it its full title) is set in a remote village where a herbalist, struggling to keep his family business going, stumbles across a miracle potion that appears to reverse ageing. Except of course everything spins out of control, leaving the clan in a desperate fight for survival. (Picture: Netflex)

KPop Demon Hunters tells the story of Rumi, Mira and Zoey, who belong to a successful band called Huntr/x. But by night, they’re demon hunters — a skill which comes in very handy when a mysterious new boyband appears on the scene. After 19 weeks on the charts, we’re starting to wonder if there’s anyone left who hasn’t seen this phenomenon. (Picture: NETFLIX)

2. The Perfect Neighbour – 20,200,000 views

My daughter was shot dead by a racist. Now I'm bringing up her four children TX TX end of w/c 6 Oct
Holding steady at number two, with an impressive number of views, is Netflix’s latest true crime hit, this one focusing on the events that shook Ocala, Florida, in summer 2023, when mother of four Ajike Owens was shot dead by her neighbour, Susan Lorincz. The feature uses bodycam footage to show what led to the killing, focusing on how a string of neighbourhood disputes ultimately turned fatal. A hugely unsettling but compelling watch, this one’s already attracting Oscar buzz. (Picture: Netflix)

1. A House Of Dynamite – 22,100,000 views

Idris Elba as POTUS in A House of Dynamite
Blasting straight into the charts at number one is the latest political thriller from Kathryn Bigelow, the first female filmmaker ever to win the best director Oscar (for 2008’s The Hurt Locker). This one unfolds in real time, telling a tense story from three different points of view as the US government scrambles to respond to an unattributed missile launch on Chicago. While some viewers have been left frustrated by the film’s ending, it’s still a brilliant, thought-provoking watch, with a stellar cast including Rebecca Ferguson, Jared Harris, Jason Clarke, Gabriel Basso and Idris Elba as the US president.
