Nicholas Hoult is stepping into summerâand villainyâwith a bold new look.
The âSupermanâ star debuted his striking platinum blonde hair during his June 25 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Fans got their first glimpse of the transformation earlier that day, when Hoult was spotted walking through Los Angeles in an oversized blue T-shirt, light denim jeans and a baseball cap partially hiding his new hair.
For his Kimmel taping, Hoult leaned into the style shift, wearing a butter yellow sweater and styling his bleached hair in a tousled, tapered cut. He later credited celebrity groomer Jamie Taylor and Salon Midori owner Lei Cicero for helping him pull off the summery switch-up.
The change marks a dramatic shift from his usual dark brown locksâand from his buzzcut, which he rocked after shaving his head for his role as Lex Luthor. Back in a SiriusXM interview, Hoult described the experience as âliberating,â adding that he even let his son take the clippers to his head.
Fans quickly chimed in online, with one Reddit user posting, âBlonde Nicholas Hoult is not something I knew I needed,â and another adding, âHonestly. I am so surprised. Like waitâ¦he actually looks goodâ With the filmâs premiere around the corner, the transformation couldnât have come at a better time.
Hoult and Corenswet Auditioned for the Superman Role on the Same Day
As it turns out, Hoult didnât originally plan to play the villain.
During their joint appearance on âJimmy Kimmel Live!â, Hoult and David Corenswet shared that they both auditioned for the role of Superman on the same day. Hoult remembered feeling confident about his audition until he spotted Corenswet sitting in a literal ray of sunlight on the studio lot.
âI walked over to say hello,â he continued, âand I was like, âGoddamn, heâs about an inch taller than me. Look at his hair. Look at his jawline.â â¦And then he spoke, and I was like, âOh, his voice is a little bit deeper too.ââ In that moment, Hoult knew. âIâd be happy if this guy was Superman. Youâre perfect for it.â
Corenswet later said that casting Hoult as Lex Luthor was âthe best thing that couldâve happened,â adding, âA superhero is only as interesting as their villain.â
Superman Sets the Stage for a New DCU Era
Opening July 11, âSupermanâ marks the first theatrical release of DC Studiosâ new cinematic universe under James Gunn and Peter Safran.
David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent/Superman, portraying a version of the hero whoâs still finding balance between his Kryptonian powers and Kansas upbringing. âWe get to meet him in this moment where [being stoic] is least true,â Corenswet told Entertainment Weekly. âHeâs a little bit Superman, heâs a little bit Clark.â
Houltâs Lex Luthor, the obsessive CEO of LuthorCorp, is fueled by envy. âIn his mind, he should be adored,â Hoult said. âAnd then this superhuman, this alien, has come along who all those things come naturally to.â
