Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock’s ’90s Cult Classic Sequel Gets a Release Date

We’re always skeptical whenever word spreads that a decades-old movie is getting a sequel. Is it worth it after all this time? Are all the original actors coming back? What could the story possibly be this time? These are some of the questions we have, and sometimes we’re happily surprised. Hocus Pocus, for example, came out in 1993, and while there was chatter for years about a sequel, it seemed unlikely. But in 2022, we got Hocus Pocus 2, and fans were thrilled.

Practical Magic, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as Sally and Gillian Owens, was released in 1998. Like Hocus Pocus, it was considered a box-office flop but became a cult classic over the years. We held our breath when rumors began in June 2024 that Kidman and Bullock were in talks to make a sequel. But now we know for sure: Practical Magic 2 will be in theaters on September 18, 2026.

Kidman and Bullock Ready to Cast a New Spell

On Warner Bros.’ Instagram page, Bullock and Kidman can be heard reciting a spell. “Tooth of wolf and morning dew. Something old and something new. Let the spell begin to mix, September 18, 2026,” they say together. Then, Harry Nilsson’s famous “Coconut” — a song closely associated with Practical Magic — begins playing.

Warner Bros. also tagged @practicalmagicmovie. With just the one post so far, we assume this will be where we can find film updates in the future.

Practical Magic was based on Alice Hoffman’s eponymous book about two sisters, Sally and Gillian, who try to end a curse on their family that causes any man they love to die. Their aunts raised them after their parents died. It was the first in a series that included the prequels “The Rules of Magic” (2017) and “Magic Lessons” (2020) and a sequel, “The Book of Magic” (2021).

The Two Previously Reflected on Getting ‘A Little Drunk’ Making ‘Practical Magic’

The two reunited in 2018 at the Academy Awards, when they spontaneously began talking about the film. Kidman appeared while Bullock was giving an interview, and, after the two women joked around a bit, Bullock mentioned the time they got tipsy during one of their Practical Magic scenes.

“We were talking about when we shot together and we asked her to get the tequila,” Bullock told the interviewer. “She came back with her own tequila but we drank it anyway. We were a little drunk.”

“I love that movie,” Kidman said. “I showed that movie to my kids. It’s a little above their [level of understanding]… But we’re really good sisters.”

“I think we are,” agreed Bullock. “And really good drinkers, too.”
