Ahead of this week’s rumoured Nintendo Direct, a YouTuber has offered an esoteric hint about what games will be shown.

Nothing’s been officially announced yet, but Nintendo fans are going into this week expecting a big Nintendo Direct, featuring multiple first party games, following the rather lacklustre partner and indie showcases over the summer.

Although Saturday, September 13 will mark the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, the belief is that the Direct won’t focus solely on Mario and friends but include a variety of game announcements.

What exactly what will be shown is a mystery but a new rumour has got fans speculating, with their only hint being that the games have something to do with ‘triple sevens.’

This comes courtesy of YouTuber SwitchForce, who previously claimed a new Nintendo Direct will air this Friday on September 12. He’s been on a bit of a hot streak lately, as he accurately predicted the last two Nintendo showcases.

His current claim has been corroborated by both VGC and reliable insider NateTheHate, though neither of them could specify an exact date.

In a new video published over the weekend, SwitchForce reasserts that the Direct is happening on the Friday, adding that he’s heard ‘there’s going to be sevens. Three sevens, actually.’

The implication is that three of the game announcements will involve the number seven, which doesn’t sound like much of a hint but has generated plenty of theories online.

Although SwitchForce says in his video, that: ‘Not a soul has guessed the correct combo yet.’

What games will be announced at the Nintendo Direct?

The safest guesses for at least two of these ‘triple seven’ games are Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The former lacks a Switch 2 release, despite Microsoft’s repeated promises that Call Of Duty will come to Nintendo’s platform.

The latter is scheduled to launch this winter, so the new Direct could provide a specific release date. Maybe it’ll even formally confirm a Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth port too.

Other suggestions that have been thrown around include Switch 2 ports of Resident Evil 7 and Yakuza: Like A Dragon (which is known as Yakuza 7 in Japan) as well an update on 007 First Light. While the James Bond game was the focus of the most recent PlayStation showcase, we’ve yet to see it running on Switch 2.

When it comes to less likely dream picks, the most popular choices we’ve seen are Ace Attorney 7 and Soulcalibur 7, although SwitchForce seems to have already shot down both possibilities.

All this seven talk has also revitalised chatter of a Dragon Quest 7 remake. In July, MP1st reported that Square Enix intends to release said remake within the next couple of years.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier strongly insinuated the remake is indeed real and, more recently, NateTheHate asserted that ‘it exists.

Dragon Quest 7 was already remade back in 2016, but it was only available for the Nintendo 3DS. So, another revamp for a more widely available console like the Switch 2 would make sense.

However, Square Enix’s push for multiplatform releases means any such remake will likely launch for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC too.

As for any announcements unrelated to the whole triple sevens thing, a release date for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is possible, but that may be saved for a dedicated Direct at a later date.

There’s also been speculation that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will see either apatch or a full-on Switch 2D Edition, thanks to a Monolith Soft job listing.

Assuming Nintendo doesn’t have a secret separate showcase planned for the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., perhaps we’ll also see a new Mario platformer – 2D or 3D – be announced. Or maybe even details for the second Super Mario Bros. movie, which is scheduled for April 3 next year.
