The singer loved the boy band so much that she began writing fanfiction about them. Years after this, she found herself in a position that would have shocked her childhood self: spending time with Harry Styles. She spoke about how their outing went.</p>

<p id=”par-2_14″>When Rodrigo was seven, <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/old-one-direction-members-auditioned-the-x-factor.html/”>One Direction formed</a>. She was an instant and dedicated fan.</p>
<p id=”par-3_47″>“I actually was the <em>hugest</em> One Direction fan when I was younger,” she told Capital FM’s Will Manning (per <a target=”_blank” href=”https://www.billboard.com/music/pop/olivia-rodrigo-texting-niall-horan-writing-one-direction-fan-fiction-9513333/” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Billboard</a>). “This is sort of embarrassing, but I’m going to tell you anyway. … I used to write One Direction fan fiction when I was in middle school.”</p>
<p id=”par-4_60″>She added that she wrote “cheesy” fantasies like, “Oh, Harry proposes to you and asks you to be his wife.” In a recent interview with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s <em>Music Makes Us</em> podcast, Rodrigo wrote more about her writing habit as a child. She never could have known that, years later, she’d spend time with Harry Styles. </p>

<p id=”par-5_33″>“I used to write One Direction fanfiction when I was in elementary school,” she said. “Many years later, I hung out with Harry Styles, and we, like, got tea, and we walked around.”</p>
<p id=”par-6_16″>She said she felt shocked, and a little like she was living out her own fanfiction.</p>
<p id=”par-7_38″>“I got home, and I was like: ‘What the f***?’” Olivia went on. “Like, I feel like I wrote that in a fanfiction and I, like, lived it. That’s so crazy, how that can happen in your life.”</p>
<p id=”par-8_12″>She added that she lived up to her childhood expectations of him.</p>
<p id=”par-9_34″>“And he’s so sweet!” she said. “I don’t want to… I know he’s very private, but I remember being like: ‘If I told 10-year-old Olivia, she’d be like: ‘Shut the f*** up! You’re lying!’”</p>

<p id=”par-10_28″>Styles isn’t the only former One Direction member with whom Rodrigo has connected. After the explosive success of <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/olivia-rodrigo-drivers-license-true-story.html/”>her song “Driver’s License,”</a> Niall Horan reached out to her.</p>
<p id=”par-11_34″>“So the fact that [Niall’s] reached out to me is amazing,” she said. “We’ve actually been texting. He’s been giving me advice about the craziness of the music industry. So it’s been really amazing.”</p>
<p id=”par-12_20″>As a self-described “die-hard” fan of the band, the support of two former members was likely very exciting to her.</p>

In an Instagram post commemorating the occasion, Rodrigo said she’s been a fan of the band since childhood.</p>
<p id=”par-14_66″>“I had a White Stripes fan account when I was 13 and last night I got to help induct them into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!!!!!” she wrote. “What a surreal honour to sing one of their beautiful songs with the wildly talented Feist and celebrate music that means so much to me. Thank u Jack and Meg for being the best band ever!!!!!!!”</p>
