‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 5 Cast: Breaking Down the Star-Studded Cast

Only Murders in the Building Season 5 cast

“Only Murders in the Building” season 5 is set to deliver one of the show’s most star-studded casts yet. The Hulu hit returns with Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) at the center of another mystery — this time sparked by the shocking death of doorman Lester (Teddy Coluca).

‘Only Murders In the Building’ Showrunner Says the Lester Storyline Was ‘Deliberate’

The discovery of Lester’s body in the Arconia courtyard fountain closes out season 4 and sets the tone for season 5. While authorities rule it an accident, the trio of amateur sleuths knows better.

As showrunner John Hoffman explained to TV Insider, “That seems absurd to the people who’ve been studying murders in the most murderous building. They are driven by, as you’ll hear over and over again, ‘We’re doing this for Lester.’”

Hoffman added that the choice to focus on the building’s longtime doorman was deliberate: “The bloody demise of Lester opened up a world of New York that felt very right for the season because it was classical New York. It’s an unusual job, a doorman in an apartment building looking after everybody, and particularly this building where a few homicides have occurred. What does that do to someone?”

The Mob and the Billionaires Join the Story in Season 5

The new season introduces both traditional and modern versions of New York power. On the mob side, Bobby Cannavale and Téa Leoni star as Nicky and Sofia Caccimelio, Staten Island natives with ties to classic mob lore. “Nicky has dreams of being Tony Soprano,” Hoffman teased. “But is the mob dead in that form?”

Adding to the authenticity, the production filmed inside “The Godfather” house. “I didn’t even realize we could do that,” Hoffman admitted. The Caccimelio family comes complete with Nicky’s mother and five adult sons, creating both comedic and chaotic dynamics.

In contrast, the “new mob” of Manhattan billionaires is represented by Renée Zellweger, Logan Lerman, and Christoph Waltz. These characters move quietly through the Arconia while using their immense resources to influence those around them. Hoffman revealed that each of the show’s three leads will find themselves paired with one of these billionaires, deepening both the mystery and the humor.

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 5 Adds Even More Star Power

The casting surprises don’t stop there. Beanie Feldstein appears as Mabel’s new friend — and occasional foe — in the building. Keegan-Michael Key plays the mayor of New York, while Jermaine Fowler joins as another doorman. Most notably, Dianne Wiest plays Lester’s widow, adding heart and humor to the season.

“I can’t tell you what it meant to me to have Dianne Wiest say she would like to be in our show,” Hoffman said. “I have been a very deep fan of Dianne Wiest for my entire life, and I just think she’s brilliant.”

Meanwhile, the main trio also face personal crossroads. Charles continues to wrestle with his “addiction to murderous women,” including a flirtation with Sofia. Oliver questions his priorities as his long-distance relationship with Loretta (Meryl Streep) complicates his love for the building. And Mabel finds herself insecure as she clashes with Feldstein’s character while navigating attention from powerful newcomers.

The first three episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” season 5 premiere Tuesday, September 9, on Hulu.
