Oprah Winfrey Reveals Surprising Side-effect of GLP-1 Medication

A fair share of celebrities have been opening up about their weight loss stories, which sometimes involves discussing their use of GLP-1 medications. That includes Meghan Trainor and Amanda Bynes as well as Oprah Winfrey. Indeed, the former television host started taking weight loss medication in 2023 and along with shedding some pounds, she’s also experienced a surprising side-effect.

In the Tuesday, December 30 cover story of People, Winfrey talked about her upcoming book “Enough: Your Health, Your Weight and What It’s Like to Be Free,” co-written by Dr. Ania M. Jastreboff.

During the interview, she revealed that along with helping her with her appetite, the weight loss medication has affected her relationship with alcohol.

When it comes to alcohol, Winfrey admits that she was quite the drinker. In fact, during her chat with People, she revealed (with a laugh) that in the past, she “could outdrink everyone at the table.”

On top of that, she noted, “I was a big fan of tequila. I literally had 17 shots one night.”

However, since being on a GLP-1 medication, she explained, “I haven’t had a drink in years.”

Beyond that, she said, “The fact that I no longer even have a desire for it is pretty amazing.”

Oprah Has Embraced Exercise

Although Winfrey has tried to incorporate exercise into her weight loss efforts in the past, things have changed now that she’s on weight loss medication.

These days, the star works out six days a week and around two hours each day doing cardio or resistance training as well as hiking.

“I don’t recognize the person who feels sluggish when she doesn’t work out,” she told People.

Those close to Winfrey have also seen a difference. Her long-time hairstylist, Nicole Mangrum, is one of those people.

“When I come in the mornings to start her hair, she’s already on the treadmill,” Mangrum revealed. “She’s looking better than she’s ever looked and more confident. It’s magnetic.”

Winfrey Wouldn’t Change Her Past

Despite Winfrey’s past struggles with her body and weight, she says that she wouldn’t change her past.

“There’s a wonderful African American spiritual that Maya Angelou used to sing: ‘I wouldn’t take nothing for my journey now,’” she said before starting to sing. “In spite of the shaming and blaming myself, I wouldn’t take nothing for the journey. Whatever was happening needed to happen to get me to this point. And I rejoice at feeling liberated from the struggle—because I had a real public struggle. And I am healthier now.”
