Orlando Bloom is pulling back the curtain on the reality behind his impressive transformation. The actor, 48, dropped 52 pounds to play a retired boxer making a comeback in the upcoming drama âThe Cut,â slimming down to his lightest weight yet.
Bloom Gets Honest About Drastic Weight Loss Transformation
During an August 27 appearance on This Morning, Bloom admitted the strict regimen pushed him to his limits, leaving him running on little more than tuna and cucumber in the final weeks. Look at Bloom’s recent photos from the London premiere of his film here.
âI was just exhausted,â he shared. âI had no energy or brain power. Mentally and physically, I was hangry â I was a horrible person to be around.â
The Intense Diet Behind His Transformation
Bloom worked with nutritionist Phillip Goglia, known for guiding Christian Bale through extreme roles. He said his meals were gradually reduced from three to two, then to just one per day.
âSuddenly, all these foods were being taken away from me, and my protein powder was the last one,â Bloom recalled. âI was like, âNo! Donât take that one.â Then basically I came down to just tuna and cucumber for the last three weeks.â
The âLord of the Ringsâ star admitted he often had to lie down between takes on set, later jumping up to do push-ups so he would âlook a little bit bulkierâ for the cameras.
Mental Toll of Extreme Weight Loss

Bloom also opened up about the psychological effects of his transformation. âThe paranoia and anxiety were very real and disturbing, caused by the lack of sleep â turns out you canât sleep when youâre hungry,â he told People.
He described experiencing âintrusive thoughtsâ and noted the toll the process took on his mood. âWeâre supposed to eat and sleep and take care of ourselves,â he said.
âItâs really a commentary on the lengths a person will go to have that second shot. I think thatâs so relatable.â
Bloom Warns Fans Not to Try His Method
Although athletes regularly cut weight for fights, Bloom emphasized that the speed and intensity of his transformation was unhealthy. âI wouldnât recommend it to anyone at home,â he said, stressing that his approach was solely for the demands of the role.
In âThe Cut,â which hits theaters September 5, Bloom plays a retired fighter obsessed with making a comeback, no matter the personal cost. While he achieved the dramatic weight loss for authenticity, the star made clear that the process left lasting impressions on both his body and mind.
