‘Outer Banks’ Season 5: Madelyn Cline Explains the 1 Thing She Refused to Do

Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline

Madelyn Cline is opening up about her character Sarah Cameron’s unexpected pregnancy storyline as “Outer Banks” heads into season 5. After the season 4 finale shocked viewers with Sarah’s revelation, the actress confirmed the plotline will continue — but with one very important stipulation.

“Well, I’m not wearing a baby bump. Everyone’s like, ‘Where’s the baby?’ I don’t know,” Cline, 27, told Variety in a September profile. “I’m not jumping over walls and getting thrown off the back of boats and sprinting at full speed away from bad guys in a silicone baby bump.”

Cline admitted the summer heat in South Carolina, where the Netflix series films, played a part in her request. “When I said yes to this storyline, that was my one stipulation: ‘Please don’t do that to me in the South Carolina summer heat.’ Most of July, the heat index was 100-116.”

Season 4 ended in fall 2024 with Sarah telling John B. Routledge, played by Chase Stokes, that she did not want to be a teen mom, only to later reveal to her best friend Kiara Carrera, played by Madison Bailey, that she was expecting.

Executive producer Josh Pate told Cosmopolitan shortly after the season 4 finale that her initial reluctance to motherhood was exactly why the writers chose the twist. “That resistance is why we gave her one,” he explained.

Executive producer Jonas Pate added, “There was something organic about it on some level, and it has to do with our larger vision of the series.” His brother Josh emphasized that the creative team debated Sarah’s outcomes before finalizing the script.

“They are devoted to each other and they’re married — in their own weird way with beer can rings, so it felt real,” he said. “And there was zero larger statement that we were thinking about outside of these two characters.”

Executive producer Shannon Burke also noted that Sarah and John B. have endured numerous challenges together, calling the pregnancy “the next stage.”

In season 4, John B. even tried to secure a marriage license after hearing the news, but JJ Maybank, played by Rudy Pankow, disrupted his plan in true Pogues fashion.

Cline teased that season 5 will begin shortly after season 4’s cliffhanger. “We pick up pretty soon after season 4 ends,” she told Variety. “We have one big time jump in all five, but just like the prior seasons, everything happens in such a short amount of time. It feels like it would be this huge, months-long adventure, but it actually doesn’t take that much time at all. I think this one follows the same formula.”

Outer Banks season 5 is set to premiere on Netflix in 2026.
