Outlander Prequel Blood of My Blood Gets Big News Before Season 1 Premiere

Jamie Roy and Harriet Slater in 'Outlander: Blood of My Blood'

Starz just doubled down on its “Outlander” universe. Weeks before viewers meet the parents of Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp, the pre-release buzz has already earned the prequel series “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” a season 2 order. With production on the new batch of episodes underway in Scotland and season 1 set to premiere on August 8, the network clearly believes it has another time-spanning hit on its hands.

Starz Green-Lights Season 2 of the ‘Outlander’ Prequel Ahead of the Series Debut

Showrunner and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts confirmed the early renewal in a statement to Variety.

“The passion and talent our cast and crew have poured into ‘Outlander: Blood of my Blood’ has been extraordinary and we’re thrilled to continue these epic love stories in Season Two,” says Roberts, “Just as audiences fell in love with Jamie and Claire, we hope viewers will be enamored by these new couples when they meet them this summer.”

Kathryn Busby, Starz’s president of programming, said the expansion “honors the original while charting bold new territory.” She added that “longtime and new fans will be drawn to the powerful love stories at the heart of this next chapter.”

Sony Pictures Television is once again producing, with cameras already rolling on season 2 across the Scottish Highlands. The quick renewal mirrors the confidence Starz showed in the flagship series back in 2014—proof that Highland romance still sells.

Everything Else We Know About ‘Blood of My Blood’

“Outlander: Blood of My Blood” unfolds two parallel romances. In 18th-century Scotland, Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) defies clan politics to be with Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy). Meanwhile, World War I nurse Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) crosses social lines to fall for soldier Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) in England. According to Starz, the couples “must defy the forces that seek to tear them apart, unfolding in surprising and unforeseen ways.”

The ensemble also features Tony Curran, Rory Alexander, Séamus McLean Ross, Sam Retford, and Conor MacNeill. Roberts once described the prequel as “a love story at its heart” that explores “what lengths a person will go to find love in a time when marriages are strategic.”

The creative pedigree matches the flagship. Roberts returns as writer and showrunner, with “Outlander” veterans Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis executive-producing. Busby notes that the spinoff expands an “Outlander” universe that has become a global phenomenon while giving viewers “names and faces they will recognize.”

Season 1 lands as the “Outlander” prepares its eighth and final season. While Jamie and Claire’s on-screen journey winds down, author Diana Gabaldon is still penning the tenth novel. Roberts told fans, “With Jamie and Claire, and now Brian and Ellen, there is still so much more to come in the ‘Outlander’ universe.”
