Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes has been at the center of the NFL universe since becoming a starter in 2018 — and for good reason. With three Super Bowl wins, two MVP awards, and a playoff résumé most quarterbacks can only dream of, Mahomes has consistently proven he’s one of the greatest to ever step under center.

However, as the NFL evolves and new stars emerge, some analysts are beginning to question whether Mahomes remains the best in the league. One such voice is Sam Monson of the 33rd Team, who recently argued that Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen has now taken that crown.

Patrick Mahomes’ Numbers May Have Dipped — But His Wins Haven’t

Mahomes, drafted 10th overall by the Chiefs in 2017, burst onto the scene with a historic start to his career. From 2018 through 2022, he averaged nearly 4,800 passing yards, 38 touchdowns, and just under 10 interceptions per season — all while maintaining a dazzling 106.2 passer rating.

In the past two seasons, some of those stats have dipped slightly. He’s averaged 4,055 yards, 26.5 touchdowns, and 12.5 interceptions, with a 93.1 passer rating. But even with that statistical dip, Mahomes continues to do what truly matters: win.

In the 2023 season, he led the Chiefs to 17 wins in 19 starts, another Super Bowl title, and helped engineer one of the most clutch postseason performances in recent memory. That alone, many say, still places him firmly atop the quarterback rankings.

Josh Allen Is Climbing — But Mahomes Still Gets the Crown

Allen is the league’s reigning MVP, and according to Monson he has surpassed Mahomes as the NFL’s best quarterback.

“I believe the best quarterback right now is Josh Allen,” Monson said on ‘Check the Mic’. “I think he’s become the guy. Like, for years it was Patrick Mahomes. Brady, that generation — once they went, Mahomes took over. The start of Mahomes’ career was absolutely mind-blowing; the last couple of years though, he’s not been that guy and really it’s been Josh Allen.”

While Monson praises Josh Allen for his elite athleticism, powerful arm, and dual-threat ability, other top analysts are not ready to knock Mahomes off the throne. Pro Football Focus, for example, still ranks Mahomes as the No. 1 quarterback heading into 2025.

“No one blends poise, playmaking and postseason performance like Mahomes,” PFF wrote in their most recent QB rankings. “Which is why he remains at No. 1 entering 2025.”

And they’re not alone. NFL.com, ESPN, and Bleacher Report have all continued to rank Mahomes as the league’s top quarterback, citing his ability to elevate his team, perform under pressure, and deliver in the postseason — areas where Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow are still looking to catch up.

Allen may be coming off the most efficient season of his career — with 40 total touchdowns, 4,262 total yards, and just six interceptions — but Mahomes remains the standard for postseason greatness.

Patrick Mahomes’ QB1 Legacy Continues

With a resume that already mirrors some of the best to ever play the game, Mahomes continues to add to his legacy. While debate among analysts is natural — especially in a league rich with emerging talent — many agree that until someone else hoists more Lombardi trophies, Mahomes is still the quarterback to beat.

As the 2025 season approaches, expect the conversation to continue — but don’t be surprised if Mahomes writes another historic chapter before it’s over.

As the Chiefs prepare to kick off their 2025 campaign with a Week 1 matchup in São Paulo, Brazil, against the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes seems ready for another MVP-caliber season.
