Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Sundayâs 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, an injury that ended both his season and the Chiefsâ playoff hopes.
Mahomes went down with 1:46 remaining in the fourth quarter after a scramble at Arrowhead Stadium. Chargers defensive lineman DaâShawn Hand brought him down from behind as Mahomes attempted to extend the play. Mahomes immediately grabbed his knee and stayed on the turf as trainers attended to him.
According to NFL Network, Mahomes underwent an MRI later Sunday that confirmed a torn ACL. The Chiefs announced the diagnosis shortly after the game. The team did not provide a timetable for surgery or recovery.
The loss dropped Kansas City to 6-8 and officially eliminated the team from postseason contention, according to ESPN. It marked the franchiseâs first playoff miss since 2014 and its first losing season since Mahomes became the starting quarterback.
Injury Ends Late Comeback Attempt
Mahomes sustained the injury while leading what appeared to be a final scoring drive. He had completed multiple short passes to move the Chiefs into Chargers territory before the scramble that ended his night.
Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew replaced Mahomes for the final plays. On fourth down, Minshew threw an interception that sealed the Chargersâ win.
After the game, Minshew praised Mahomesâ leadership and impact on the team.
âHeâs the best player Iâve ever been around,â Minshew said, according to Sports Illustrated. âThe way he works and competes sets the tone for everyone in the building.â
The Chiefs entered the season with Super Bowl expectations but struggled with injuries and inconsistency throughout the year. Kansas City lost several close games in the second half of the season, setbacks that ultimately cost the team a postseason berth.
Mahomes Speaks Out After Diagnosis
Mahomes addressed the injury later Sunday in a message posted on social media. The quarterback expressed confusion and disappointment while emphasizing his commitment to recovery.
âDonât know why this had to happen,â Mahomes wrote. âIt hurts, but I trust God and the process. Iâll attack rehab every single day.â
Mahomes also thanked fans for their messages of support, calling the situation difficult to process but saying he remains focused on returning stronger.
The torn ACL represents the most serious injury of Mahomesâ career with the Kansas City Chiefs. He has largely avoided long-term injuries since becoming the starter in 2018.
Kansas City now enters an uncertain offseason without its franchise quarterback on the field. For Mahomes, the months ahead will center on surgery, rehabilitation, and patience rather than playoff preparation.
For a team accustomed to deep postseason runs, Sundayâs loss closed the door on a disappointing season. It also opened a new chapter, one defined not by wins and losses, but by recovery and the promise of a return.
