Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono’s relationship has been rocky over the years. They clashed while The Beatles were still together and continued to be at odds even after John Lennon’s death. While they are on better terms now, they will likely never be close friends. McCartney said that after Lennon died, Ono said something about him that was unbelievably hurtful.

Paul McCartney felt hurt by the way Yoko Ono spoke about him

Several months after Lennon’s death, McCartney called author Hunter Davies in a foul mood. He took Davies, who wrote the only authorized biography of The Beatles, to task over the way he compared Lennon and McCartney in a recent interview. Davies described Lennon as a “hard man” while McCartney was “softer and more melodic.”

McCartney also talked to Davies about an interview he found even more offensive.

“But what had really got him upset that day was an interview with Yoko, in which Yoko was quoted as saying that Paul had hurt John more than any other person,” Davies wrote in The Beatles. “Paul thought they were some of the cruelest words he had ever read.”

McCartney said that he couldn’t possibly have hurt Lennon more than anyone else. He also didn’t think it was fair that people overlooked the ways in which Lennon hurt him.

“No one ever goes on about the times John hurt me,” McCartney said. “When he called my music Muzak. People keep on saying I hurt him, but where’s the examples, when did I do it? No one ever says. It’s just always the same, blaming me. Could I have hurt John more than anyone in the world? More than the person who ran down [his mother] Julia in his car?”

He added that Ono’s words in the interview were incongruous with what she’d recently told him about Lennon.

“We were always in competition. I wrote ‘Penny Lane,’ so he wrote ‘Strawberry Fields,’” McCartney said. “That was how it was. But that was in compositions. I can’t understand why Yoko is saying this. The last time I spoke to her she was great. She told me she and John had just been playing one of my albums and had cried.”

He also felt angry about the way she talked about him

In the aftermath of Lennon’s death, McCartney had a problem with the way Ono spoke about him in more than just that interview. He thought she unfairly downplayed his contributions to The Beatles.

“[Y]oko would appear in the press, and I’d read it, and it said, ‘Paul did nothing! All he did was book the studio…’” McCartney told <a target=”_blank” href=”https://www.esquire.com/uk/culture/a8511/paul-mccartney-interview/” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Esquire. “Like, “F*** you, darling! Hang on! All I did was book the f***ing studio?”

He believed many people, Ono included, made Lennon into a hero after his death.

“There was a lot of revisionism: John did this, John did that,” he said. “I mean, if you just pull out all his great stuff and then stack it up against my not-so-great stuff, it’s an easy case to make.”

Yoko Ono said Paul McCartney saved her marriage to John Lennon

While Ono and McCartney were often at odds, she did appreciate one thing he did to help her. In 1973, Lennon and Ono separated and he began a relationship with the couple’s assistant, May Pang. While Ono thought they needed time apart, she eventually began to want her husband back home. She confided this in McCartney and his wife, Linda, and McCartney offered to speak to Lennon for her.

“I took him into the back room and said, ‘This girl of yours, she really still loves you … You’re going to have to work your little a** off, man. You have to get back to NYC and you have to take a separate flat, you have to send her roses every f***ing day, you have to work at it like a b****!” McCartney said in the book Paul McCartney: A Life by Peter Ames Carlin.

Ono said she would always appreciate McCartney for this.

“I want the world to know that it was a very touching thing that he did for John,” she said, per the <a target=”_blank” href=”https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1319101/Yoko-Ono-reveals-Paul-McCartney-saved-marriage-John-Lennon.html” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Daily Mail. “He was genuinely concerned about his old partner.
