<p id=”par-2_75″>The royal couple donned matching Dodger ballcaps as they watched the game unfold in prime seats behind the pitch clock. But their appearance at the game – which the Dodgers lost 6-2 – wasn’t a hit with everyone. Fans at Dodger Stadium booed the <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/prince-harry-meghan-markles-sussex-brand-drama-season-jerry-springer-royal-commentator.html/”>Duke and Duchess of Sussex</a> when they appeared on the Jumbotron, according to <a href=”https://www.tmz.com/2025/10/29/meghan-markle-prince-harry-booed-dodger-game/”>TMZ</a>. Meanwhile, many commenters online wondered why the pair were supporting the Dodgers given their connections to Toronto. </p>

<p id=”par-3_55″>The Sussexes were just two of many celebrities at the October 28 Dodgers-Blue Jays showdown in Los Angeles. Brad Pitt, Flea, Connie Britton, Sydney Sweeney, and Dodgers legend Sandy Koufax also attended the game. But Meghan and Harry’s appearance drew the particular ire of some who felt they should have been supporting the opposing team.</p>
<p id=”par-4_18″>When the MLB shared a photo of the couple at the game on <a href=”https://www.instagram.com/p/DQX9wfljcGe/?hl=en&img_index=1″ target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Instagram</a>, critical comments rolled in. </p>
<p id=”par-5_14″>“Toronto is part of the commonwealth and they cheer for the Dodger,” one wrote. </p>
<p id=”par-6_17″>“I guess the Commonwealth is just not a thing to him anymore,” another said of Prince Harry. </p>
<p id=”par-7_12″>“Cheering for USA… disappointing. What an embarrassment for Canada,” commented one person. </p>
<p id=”par-8_13″>“YOUR GRANDMA IS ON THE MONEY IN TORONTO,” pointed out another outraged fan. </p>
<p id=”par-9_75″>Not only is Canada part of the Commonwealth of Nations (a loose affiliation of former British colonies and current crown dependencies), but Meghan and Harry also have personal ties to the country’s largest city. <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/meghan-markle-former-home-just-went-sale-eye-popping-amount.html/”>Meghan was living in Toronto</a>, where she was filming <em>Suits, </em>when she started dating Harry in 2016. Harry later visited here there. Their first public outing as a couple was at the 2017 Invictus Games, which were held in the city.</p>
<p id=”par-10_23″>Several outraged Canadians dug up photo evidence that Meghan had donned Blue Jays gear during her time in Toronto, the <a href=”https://ca.news.yahoo.com/traitor-prince-harry-meghan-markle-160408504.html” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>National Post</a> reported. </p>
<p id=”par-11_52″>“Meghan is a traitor, she got sorta famous for acting in Suits in Toronto, where she lives for 7 years and became a millionaire which led to her meeting Harry,” a Toronto woman commented on <a href=”https://x.com/6thsensemoment/status/1983516746918072782″>X</a>. “She could be really charitable and root for the commonwealth team and not your home team?” </p>

<p id=”par-12_60″>The over-the-top reaction to Meghan’s decision to don Dodger blue at Tuesday’s game is somewhat bizarre considering that the Dodgers are her hometown team. While the <em>With Love, Meghan </em>star does have ties to Toronto, she grew up in Los Angeles. And she and her husband currently live in Montecito, a posh seaside community about 100 miles north of LA. </p>
<p id=”par-13_20″>“She is a California girl. Born and raised. She’s always been a Dodgers fan,” one person pointed out on Instagram. </p>
<p id=”par-14_48″>Meghan’s also showed support for the Dodgers in the past. In 2016, she was spotted shopping for groceries in Toronto while wearing a Dodgers hat, noted <a href=”https://dresslikeaduchess.com/2023/08/new-era-la-los-angeles-blue-baseball-cap-meghan-markle/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Dress Like a Duchess</a>. She wore a similar cap earlier this year when she was in Pasadena <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/expert-points-out-1-very-odd-detail-meghan-markles-latest-instagram-post.html/”>volunteering to help wildfire victims</a>.</p>
<p id=”par-15_59″>Harry’s choice to back the Dodgers is likely about following his wife’s lead. It might also be his way of putting further distance between himself and his royal family. He’s lived in California with his wife since 2020. Cheering on the home team (and current World Series champions) could be a way to cement his connections to the U.S.</p>
<p id=”par-16_70″>Meghan and Harry might have one other reason to back the Dodgers. She is a distant relative of all-star shortstop Mookie Betts, <a href=”https://people.com/meghan-markle-family-connection-dodgers-player-resurfaces-following-surprise-world-series-appearance-11839642″>People</a> reports. In 2018, an amateur genealogist discovered evidence in an 1870 Alabama census that suggested both were descended from a family of enslaved people owned by a Virginia man named Elisha Betts. In addition, Meghan’s great-great aunt, Katie Betts, was married to Mookie’s great-great uncle, Richard Betts. </p>
<p id=”par-17_51″>Meghan met Mookie (who was then playing for the Boston Red Sox) when he was in London for a game against the New York Yankees in 2019. On her Instagram Story on Tuesday, Meghan shared some highlights from the game, including a brief glimpse of her admiring Mookie’s Gold Glove award. </p>
