As fans and Hollywood continue to mourn the loss of Rob Reiner, we’re looking back at one of his most popular television roles: “All in the Family.” The hit show ran from 1971-1979 and left viewers with fun, lasting memories. But what did the cast do once the series ended, and what do they look like over 45 years later?
Jean Stapleton Played Lovable Mom Edith Bunker
GettyThe family’s matriarch, Edith Bunker, wasn’t exactly an intellectual, but she was the heart and soul of the show. “A very compassionate individual,” actress Jean Stapleton said of her character in a video interview. “Not very bright, not well-educated, but [with] a great sense of wisdom and heart.”
After leaving the series, Stapleton continued steadily acting for decades, mostly taking on small television and film roles. Her last projects took place in 2001, when she starred in both “Pursuit of Happiness” and “Like Mother Like Son: The Strange Story of Sante and Kenny Kimes.” She passed away in 2013, when she was 90 years old.
Carroll O’Connor Starred as “All in the Family” Patriarch Archie Bunker
Getty“All in the Family” featured a traditional patriarch in Archie Bunker, and actor Carroll O’Connor was perfect for the role. He was already nearly two decades into his acting career by the time the beloved sitcom aired, and his experience showed in how he took on this role. Archie wasn’t very warm and fuzzy toward his family, but it was still clear he loved them.
O’Connor continued to be part of the “All in the Family” universe through the spin-off “Archie Bunker’s Place,” which ran from 1979 to 1983. He passed away in 2001 from complications related to type 2 diabetes, and his funeral drew mourners from all across Hollywood.
Sally Struthers Charmed Audiences as Gloria Stivic
GettyThe Bunkers’ lovable daughter, Gloria, was a fan-favorite throughout the series. In fact, her character was so well-loved that she lived on in two spin-offs after the original series wrapped. Like O’Connor, she appeared in “Archie Bunker’s Place,” but she also starred in “Gloria,” a short-lived show with her character front and center.
GettyStruthers has enjoyed a steady career in Hollywood since her Gloria days, and most recently starred in the Netflix original “A Man on the Inside.” She even reunited with her former on-screen husband, Rob Reiner, at the Emmys in 2024. After the news of his tragic passing broke in 2025, she told Deadline: “There are no words. This is beyond devastating and my heart is with their family.”
Rob Reiner will be Remembered for his Performance as Michael Stivic
GettyThe late Rob Reiner has an impressively long resume. He was an accomplished actor, writer, and director over the years, and fans have a legendary compendium of works to remember him by. However, Michael Stivic still stands as a fan-favorite early role for him. Michael was the Bunkers’ son-in-law, who often butted heads with Archie’s traditional world views. He provided memorable comic relief and a look at how younger generations of the time were approaching marriage, family, and gender roles.
Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, were tragically killed in December 2025. The director was just 78 years old at the time. The couple leaves behind four adult children and a stunning Hollywood legacy.
