PlayStation State Of Play announced but it’s only for one game

Sony has announced a State Of Play presentation for this week, although it’s not the PS5 showcase you were hoping for.

It’s been a bizarrely quiet year for Sony, with Ghost of Yōtei being the only first party PlayStation 5 exclusive set to launch in 2025, thanks to the delay of Marathon.

There are projects on the far horizon, including Insomniac’s Wolverine and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet from Naughty Dog, but it’s hard to feel too excited about them when they don’t have any release date – or even year.

As such, a Sony presentation feels long overdue, to lay out the PlayStation 5 roadmap for the years to come. But that’s not what’s happening this week.

A State Of Play presentation was rumoured for September, in what’s become an annual tradition, and Sony has now confirmed the broadcast is happening this week… but not really.

Sony has announced a State Of Play will take place on Wednesday, September 3 but it will only feature Io Interactive’s 007 First Light. The broadcast will air at 7pm BST on PlayStation’s YouTube and Twitch channels, and feature ‘over 30 minutes of gameplay’ from the title.

According to the PlayStation blog, the gameplay will span a ‘playthrough of Bond’s first mission as an MI6 recruit,’ which includes ‘everything from high-speed car chases to on-foot stealth sequences and shootouts’.

007 First Light is slated to launch across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC next year, but this might be when we get a specific release date. The game depicts an origin story for James Bond, who is played by The OA actor Patrick Gibson.

There’s a chance Sony will hold another State Of Play later this month, with this perhaps making way for other announcements in the pipeline, but we wouldn’t hold out too much hope, as there’s not even any rumours of such a thing at the moment.

Coincidentally, at around the same time, Kojima Productions announced a special 10th anniversary event for September 23, 2025 in Tokyo, Japan.

The event, entitled Beyond The Strand, will be livestreamed online and hosted by Hideo Kojima. It will ‘include special guest appearances as well as offer a glimpse into future projects’, according to the studio’s website.

Following the launch of Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Kojima has two games on the go, between Xbox exclusive OD with Get Out director Jordan Peele and Metal Gear spiritual successor Physint. However, it’s unclear if we’ll see these projects or something else, like the live action movie based on Death Stranding from A24.

Either way, it looks set to be a busy month for gaming presentations, with a Nintendo Direct also strongly rumoured for next week.
