Pomeranian chases black bear out of Vancouver home

As anyone who’s ever lived with or encountered a small dog knows, the “small” is a complete misnomer. Small dogs are not small, they are the biggest, fiercest, humongousest creatures out there. My own nine-pound long-haired Chihuahua My Guy routinely protects me from other dogs (who are simply minding their own business) and large inanimate objects as a show of his strength. The fact that My Guy just so happens to look like a lusciously-maned model with a Garnier Fructis contract is all part of his cover; make no mistake, he is a lethal foe! And so is Scout, the five-pound fluffy-haired Pomeranian who calls Vancouver home. Last week an intruder trespassed on Scout’s turf, and Scout was NOT having it! It didn’t matter that the intruder was a black bear cub, Scout chased that cub out of the house and through the backyard, as Scout’s person Kayla Kleine captured on her security camera and later shared on TikTok.

A five-pound, fluffy Pomeranian transformed into the ultimate guard dog to protect its home from a wild animal.

The fierce pup courageously chased a black bear out of a Vancouver home earlier this month. The rare encounter was caught on camera on Aug. 4, by Kayla Kleine’s home security cameras.

The video shows a black bear walking into the house through the patio door. The bear curiously sniffs around before the feisty Scout appears, barking and growling as he chases the bear out of the house.

In Kleine’s TikTok video caption, she writes, “The bear was in our kitchen for a few min eating the dog food…”

Kleine revealed in another TikTok video that the bear and its mom had visited the home multiple times before. The video shows a clip of the mother bear breaking down the backyard fence and nonchalantly wandering around.

In another follow-up video, Kleine posted to TikTok, Scout proudly defends the backyard, ready to take on any bears that dare to come.

While Scout fiercely protected his home solo, he’s not the first small dog to chase away a bear. In 2021, security footage caught two tiny terriers — Mei Mei and Squirt — scaring off a bear from their Pasadena home.

“As the bear was turning back, these two noticed him and chased him out,” the owner, Deedee Mueller, told ABC7 of the incident at the time. “And he ran up the stairs, ran outside.”

“And we saw, actually, a trail of urine, so clearly the bear was very nervous,” Mueller added.

She also said of her dogs’ behavior with a laugh, “They were both out here telling the bear, ‘Get out, this is our home!’”

Oh, so not only was the bear a repeat offender, but in this particular instance he dared to eat Scout’s food! That’s the real crime, here! My Guy isn’t super food obsessed, but his predecessor My Girl would have screamed bloody murder if someone had swooped in and snarfed up her food. (Actually, she would’ve avoided such a confrontation entirely because she never left food standing long enough for someone else to get at it. We were kindred spirits that way.) And come to think of it, while My Guy does put on a show of prowess when out on our walks, when faced with a bug crawling on the couch in our own home, My Guy just of kind of froze in place, looking back and forth between me and bug as if to say, “Hey Lady, you gonna do anything about that?”

Anyway, Bravo to Scout for boldly and with nary a hint of hesitation leaping into action to defend his food home! Though I do hope there are some structures in place to keep Scout from running too far afield in his quest to yell at bears. Then again, to be fair, this cub’s mama did quite the number breaking down the fence to get into the yard in the first place. For long lasting results, this may be a case that calls for the master of shooing away bears, Helen Mirren.
