Season three of “House of the Dragon,” the spin-off from HBO’s iconic “Game of Thrones,” is expected to premiere in 2026. Now, the showrunner for the series, Ryan Condal, is confirming that it will end after its fourth season.
He said on the “Escape Hatch” podcast, “We’re getting rough cuts and early material. I feel good. Iâm walking a lot more now â commuting into central London on foot and by tube â which has been good for me.
It really feels like weâve turned a big page here. Knowing thereâs only one more season left, it feels like we can leave it all out on the field. Weâve started the writing process for Season 4, which will be the last one.”
He continued, discussing the attention to detail that goes into the show. According to Condal, “It takes so long to make these dragons that we have to protect that time and make sure they look as good as they do. So yeah â it was exhausting.
But in many ways, it was the happiest season Iâve had on the show. For a number of reasons, my mental spirit was as high as itâs ever been, making this thing. Physically, though, I was pretty run into the ground by the end. Now, having finished and seeing early material coming in, thereâs a real spring in my step. We shot a gigantic series. Iâm feeling very bullish about it.”
It’s worth noting that the plan for the series has been to last four seasons. However, Condal’s confirmation shows that HBO is interested in telling other stories set in the “Game of Thrones” universe, despite the success of “House of the Dragon.”
Filming on ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Wrapped in 2025
GettyThe cast and crew of “House of the Dragon” began production on the third season in early 2025 in the UK. As Condal stated in his interview, they wrapped filming in October, and the show is now in post-production.
For comparison, season two of the hit HBO series premiered in June 2024, while the first season arrived in August 2022. If the trend holds, it seems likely that “House of the Dragon” season four will air during the summer.
The cast includes Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, James Norton, Tommy Flanagan, and Dan Fogler.
There’s a New Game of Thrones Spin-Off Series Premiering
In many ways, “Game of Thrones” changed the landscape of television. As a result, there is still significant interest in seeing George RR Martin’s stories come to life on the screen. According to Deadline, the latest spin-off, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” will premiere on HBO and HBO Max on January 18, almost three years after “House of the Dragon” started.
The upcoming prequel series stars Peter Claffey, Finn Bennett, Dexter Sol Ansell, Henry Ashton, and Tanzyn Crawford. It’s adapted from Martin’s “Tales of Dunk and Egg” novellas.
