“Pretty Little Liars” star Shay Mitchell responded to the backlash she received after announcing her newest business venture.
Shay Mitchell Addresses Backlash Regarding Children’s Skincare Line
Shortly after announcing the launch of her children’s skincare line, rini, Shay was flooded with harsh criticism from fans and followers who voiced their concern.
“I was a little surprised, but I think anything that involves kids, there should be a conversation around it,” the actress said during a Wednesday, November 19, interview on “Today with Jenna & Friends”. “I have a lot of questions, as I’m sure you both do when anything involves our kids â with what they eat and what they put on their skin. So I didn’t think this would be anything different.”
She went on to explain that her brand was born out of her own experience as a mother of two girls. (Shay shares daughters Atlas, 6, and Rome, 3, with longtime partner Matte Babel.)
“Seeing that there wasn’t anything out there I felt safe enough putting on [my daughters’] skin when they wanted to share in on this moment that I do,” she continued, adding that “skincare starts from birth.”
According to Shay, her children’s moisturizing masks are a “positive introduction into a healthy relationship with skin care.”
“I want them to grow up and be conscious about what it is that they’re putting on their skin â anything that touches it,” she explained.
Shay Mitchell’s Children’s Skincare Line Was Hit With Backlash
While social media users seem to be obsessed with Shay’s luggage brand, Béis, that love did not immediately translate to praise for her new company.
âWhat kind of a message is this sending to young girls?â one follower commented on her Instagram announcement earlier this month.
“Even if the intention is good, kids really donât need skincare,” another added.
“Just because they want to ‘do what mommy does’ doesnât mean they should,” a third voiced.
Shay explained that rather than looking at it as “a beauty thing,” instead parents should view rini as self care.
“I think when my girls see me do this at the end of the night or when I’m reading a story, that’s Mommy’s time to give back to herself. So it really is about how you speak with the girls,” she told Jenna Bush Hager on Wednesday. “As conscious as they are about what they put in their bodies like eating, snacks, all of that. That’s the same thing with this.”
