So, hereâs the deal: Rami Malekâs latest movie âThe Amateurâ is flipping the script on your typical action flick, and yep, you guessed itâmath is somehow involved. We’re talking cryptography, revenge, and an underdog story thatâs got some serious punch. Youâre gonna want to pay attention to this one.
Math, Murder, and a CIA Secret Agent?
If youâve ever watched Malek play an intense character (“Mr. Robot,” anyone?), then you know the guy can handle the pressure. But in âThe Amateur,â heâs taking it to a whole new level. Malek plays Charles Heller, a CIA analyst whoâs basically the ânumbers guyâ until tragedy strikes; his wife is killed in a terrorist attack, according to the recently released trailer (seen below).Â
But here’s the twist: instead of filing the paperwork and letting the professionals do their thing, Heller decides to take things into his own hands, and no, itâs not because of some crazy plot twist; itâs because he’s smart enough to use his brain (and some seriously complicated math) to take down the âbad guys.â
Who knew math could kill, right? But Heller isnât just any analyst; heâs got the skills to break codes, crack conspiracies, and chase down justice, no matter the cost. One fan even jokingly commented on the trailer saying, âAs a systemadmin it’s nice to finally be recognised as the action heroes we clearly are.â
A New Take on the Revenge Thriller
What makes âThe Amateurâ stand out is how it shifts from the typical action-packed revenge story to something more cerebral. While there are the usual action movie moments (i.e. explosive car chases and overly dramatic stunts) here, thereâs also a world of intelligence work where every move is calculated, every piece of information is a puzzle, and, of course, every math equation is a potential weapon.
Hellerâs journey is part psychological thriller, part nail-biting chase, and totally refreshing in the espionage movie world. Think of it as âJason Bourneâ meets âThe Imitation Gameâ but with a vengeance-fueled twist.
âAn aggressively competent spy thriller… makes a compelling enough case to sustain itself across the entire television seasonâs worth of plot that it packs into two hours.âÂ
David Ehrlich, IndieWire
With a stacked cast, including Laurence Fishburne (“CSI,” “Hannibal”) and Holt McCallany (“Misson Impossible,” “Fight Club”), this movie has got more depth than a typical action flick. Malekâs performance is layered, his characterâs vulnerability makes him relatable, and his transformation from analyst to action hero is nothing short of entertaining.Â
âThe Amateurâ hits theaters on April 11, 2025, and it seems like this oneâs going to be a blast. Grab your popcornâitâs going to be a math-heavy, revenge-filled ride!
