Despite the poor state of Gene Hackman’s Santa Fe Home when his and his wife, Betsy Awakawa’s, bodies were found on February 26, 2025, local real estate agents say that they won’t have a tough time selling the property, according to TMZ
When speaking to the outlet, Ken Martinez of Keller Williams Realty, Jer Collins of Exp Realty, and Shak Bani from Santa Fe Properties all said that, despite the fact that the property was infested with dead rodents, it shouldn’t “be a dealbreaker when it comes time for the property to hit the open market.”
The location was the biggest selling point.
TMZ added that “New Mexico realtors aren’t required to disclose that Gene and Betsy died in the home when showing it to potential buyers;” however, when they spoke to the realtors, they “didn’t think the fact the actor and his wife were found dead inside the home would be a big deal anyways.”
Jer Collins of Exp Realty even admitted that this fact could intrigue some potential buyers.
Body Cam Footage Released From Gene Hackman Scene
On April 15, police body camera footage posted by TMZ showed authorities discovering the bodies of Hackman and Arakawa, along with the body of one of their three dogs.
They found Arakawaâs body first with one of their dogs next to her. They then found Hackmanâs body. One of Hackman and Arakawaâs dogs, Zinnia, was also discovered deceased in a crate. Santa Fe County animal control said that Zinnia likely died of dehydration and starvation.
The other two dogs were discovered on the property and have since been placed in loving homes.
In the footage, Hackman’s handyman was also seen asking the cops to keep everything as quiet as possible, as the couple lived a very private life.
Gene Hackman and Betsy Awakawa’s Property Was Full of Rodents

In a report obtained by TMZÂ on April 14, The New Mexico Department of Public Health found that there were dead rodents, droppings, and nests in eight buildings along the coupleâs property.
While the primary residence didn’t show any signs of rodent activity inside, it was reportedly found in three garages, two casitas, and three sheds on their property.
This news directly relates to Arakawa’s cause of death, with it determined to be from Hanta Pulmonary Syndrome, which is a respiratory illness caused by hantaviruses, which are viruses that are primarily transmitted by rodents.
As for Hackman, his death was due to heart disease with complications from Alzheimerâs disease.
