Ricky Martin has been discussing the craziness of day-to-day life while starring in “Palm Royale.”
The second season of the brilliant period comedy-drama is currently airing on Apple TV. Its ensemble cast also includes the likes of Kristen Wiig, Josh Lucas, Leslie Bibb, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, and Carol Burnett (per IMDb).
Martin, 53, was talking to Parade about his experience on the series. He laughed in agreement when it was suggested to him that his experience filming the show reminded him of his soap opera days.
The Puerto Rican icon played Miguel Morez on “General Hospital” from 1994 until 1995, and likens the job demands and craziness of the soap’s storylines to what’s happening in season 2 of “Palm Royale.”
Martin Says His Role Is ‘Overwhelming and Exhausting’
Apple TVRicky Martin plays Robert Diaz, an ex Korean War Marine and bartender at the eponymous exclusive country club, in “Palm Royale.” He told Parade that his time playing the role has been hectic, to say the least.
Martin said, “Something happens and Maxine [played by Kristen Wiig] is running. And she leaves the room, and I’m like, ‘Can we have a day, a normal day in this city?’”
He continued, while laughing, saying, “Because it was overwhelming and exhausting. Everything. And just reading it was like, ‘Oh my God, what is this? Whatâs gonna happen?’”
Despite the demands of his role on “Palm Royale,” Martin says he feels privileged to be part of the series and to be given the opportunity to sing in it. He said, “I’m very honored to tell the story of a gay man in the ’60s with this project, so it’s been nothing but a gift.”
Martin Was Talking to Parade Alongside Co-Star Leslie Bibb
GettRicky Martin’s interview with Parade was a joint affair with “Palm Royale” co-star Leslie Bibb, who also shared her insight into working on the series.
Bibb, 52, plays Dinah Donohue, an ambitious and cunning but vulnerable socialite on the show. She says that, despite the show’s scale and grandeur, “Palm Royale’s” showrunner Abe Sylvia has an incredible way of grounding its characters.
She said, “I don’t know how he does it, but we’re doing these extraordinary things, these outlandish things, and at the base of them, all the characters are somehow rooted. There’s a basement for every character. Their feet are somehow planted on the ground, even though they’re not, but you can relate to them.”
Bibb added, “Sometimes when people get so big, you’re like, ‘Oh, we’re not, you know, you can’t.’ You’re like, ‘That’s over there,’ and you’re laughing at it from over there. Somehow, you’re like, ‘No, I would probably do that. Yeah. I would steal a dead body. Nope, I would do that to get Laura Dern out of jail. Yeah, thatâs exactly what I would do’” (a reference to her character’s actions on the show).
Martin then spoke up, “It’s funny, but I think we’re all little kids in this show. That’s what it was.”
It certainly sounds like the actors on “Palm Royale” had an interesting experience filming its second season!
Season 2 of “Palm Royale” premiered on Apple TV on November 12. New episodes of the series will be released weekly up to and including January 14 next year.
