Rob Reiner spent years publicly reflecting on one of the most painful chapters of his life: learning how to truly understand his son Nick Reinerâs battle with addiction. Following the confirmed deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, those deeply personal reflections â and the film born from them â have taken on renewed attention as police question Nick in connection with the apparent homicides.
Authorities confirmed that Rob, 78, and Michele, 68, were found dead in their Hollywood home on Sunday, Dec. 14. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the deaths. Nick, 32, has not been arrested or charged, but People reports, he is being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Rob Reinerâs Most Personal Film Focused on His Sonâs Addiction
In 2016, Rob directed âBeing Charlie,â a deeply personal film co-written by Nick and inspired by his real-life struggles with addiction and homelessness. At the time, Rob described the project as a turning point in how he understood his son â and his own role as a parent.
âIt was very personal,â Rob said in a 2016 interview with âToday.â âWhat I didnât understand is the depth of what [Nick] was going through.â
Nick later shared that he entered rehab 17 times and experienced homelessness before getting sober at 19. âThat made me who I am now,â he told People that same year. âThere were a lot of dark years there.â
The film follows a fictionalized version of Nick, portrayed as the troubled son of a famous actor turned political figure â a character modeled closely after Rob himself. Cary Elwes, who previously starred in Robâs 1987 classic âThe Princess Bride,â played the father figure in the movie.
Rob admitted the process forced him to confront uncomfortable truths about how he and Michele handled their sonâs addiction. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times at the Toronto International Film Festival, he said, âWhen Nick would tell us that it wasnât working for him, we wouldnât listen. We were desperate, and because people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son.â
Michele echoed that sentiment in the same interview. âWe were so influenced by these people,â she said. âThey would tell us heâs a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them.â
‘Being Charlie’ Resurfaces as Police Question Nick Reiner
Following confirmation of Rob and Micheleâs deaths, clips and trailers from âBeing Charlieâ began circulating widely on X. One post shared the trailer, writing, “This is the trailer for Rob Reinerâs Being Charlie. A deeply personal film co-written by his son Nick, drawn from Nickâs years battling addiction. Reiner later said, âWhat I didnât understand was the depth of what my son was going through.â A father trying to truly see his child.”
Nick has spoken candidly in the past about the emotional toll of his addiction. âI got sick of it,â he said. âI come from a nice family. Iâm not supposed to be out there on the streets and in homeless shelters doing all these things.â
Police have not released further details about the investigation, and no arrests have been made. A spokesperson for the family confirmed Rob and Micheleâs deaths in a statement, asking for privacy during what they described as an âunbelievably difficult time,” in a statement to Variety.
