Rob Reiner’s Son Nick Reiner Described as ‘Gentle’ & ‘Kind’ Before His Parents Tragic Passing

A spotlight has been shone on the Reiner family since the heartbreaking double murder of Rob Reiner and his wife of 36 years, Michele Singer. The couple was reported dead on Sunday, December 14. Their middle son, Nick Reiner, has been arrested and charged with their deaths, People reports. 

Nick had struggled with sobriety since he was a teenager. He used these struggles to help pen the film “Being Charlie.” Although it was not an exact representation of his life, he was able to co-write it with his friend Matt Elisofon because of his experiences with addiction. At the time of the film, Nick and Rob appeared hopeful. But the version of who Nick was then is not the version described in the media now.

Producer Douglas Shaffer has commented on the version of Nick he met during filming, noting that he seemed “gentle” and “kind.” 

“From my interactions with Nick, he seemed like a gentle guy,” Shaffer said in an interview with People. “He was very open. You didn’t see this inner rage or anything like that.” Shaffer continued, “He seemed just kind of calm, cool, and collected, and he was young at the time. He was 22, but again, that’s where it’s just that this is a mystery.”

Shaffer also mentioned producer Stephanie Rennie, who had a closer relationship with Nick and Elisofon. “When she heard about the news, she said, ‘It’s a fever dream… it’s just unfathomable,’” Shaffer recalled of learning that Nick was responsible for the death of his parents. “She didn’t see it coming. Nobody saw it coming, and she was closer to those guys and it doesn’t make any sense to her.”  

Many questions remain unanswered, and the exact story of what happened that day will eventually come to light. Some, like Shaffer, hope it will lead to a better understanding of how Nick committed these horrific acts. He also discussed mental health.

“I feel like it is a mental health issue that needs to be on the forefront of a lot of discussions,” Shaffer said. “It is a big talking point that sometimes just gets swept under the rug, and it affects a lot of people and it affects a lot of families. Obviously, it affected this family, who seemed to have the perfect support system for their son. And you can only imagine other people who are dealing with that.”

Rob and Singer were discovered at their Brentwood home in California. It was their daughter, Romy Reiner, the youngest of their three shared children, who alerted authorities. 

In the days since the announcement of Rob’s and his beloved wife’s passing, social media has been flooded with reactions praising them as lovely people. Rob also leaves behind an incredible body of work, and his impact on the entertainment industry has been undeniable.
