Ron Howard has been primarily directing and producing for decades, but he told People on March 29 that he would return to acting for a special someone.
“I think that if my daughter Bryce [Dallas Howard] cast me in something, that would compel me to put down the directing obligation, put them on hold for a minute and show up,” he said.
Howard continued, “But otherwise, between what’s going on at my company Imagine Entertainment with Brian Grazer and our team, and what I’m personally trying directorially, I keep my calendar full in ways that are exciting and I want to succeed at. I want to focus.”
The former “Happy Days” star told People that he loves being behind the camera and has been focusing his career on documentaries and scripted films.
“I think both disciplines are kind of informing each other in interesting ways, and it’s stimulating some growth for me creatively, which is exciting at this point in my life,” Howard added.
The executive producer for “Fight for Glory: 2024 World Series” said of creating his art, “It is endlessly fascinating and satisfying for me, and I feel fortunate to keep doing it. Itâs the medium that canât be mastered. A little bit like baseball, nobody bats a thousand.”
Howard Took Control of His Career When He Began Directing

“Happy Days” was Howard’s last big on-screen television role before he focused his career on directing and producing.
In a 2105 interview with Express, he revealed that while working on the sitcom, he learned that acting wasn’t for him.
“I listened and learned — and knew that I would never survive as an actor. There was also a lot of stuff going on that I did not understand or could not come to terms with. I was not assertive. I was not a leader,” Howard said.
The “Frost/Nixon” director continued, “You have to be like some of the big stars such as Dustin Hoffman to make it. He could take control while remaining an actor. I was relaxed but never terribly satisfied with my work.”
Howard found success as a director and has won two Oscar awards and five Emmys as of 2025. Still, he takes to heart what people think of him and admitted to Express, “Money is not my driving force. But I do read reviews of my films and care about them. I am always disappointed to see criticism. In that way, I am still sensitive and part of Hollywood.”
Howard Wanted to Protect His Daughter From the Pressures of Hollywood

Howard began his career as a child actor, but he shared in an interview with People that he wanted Bryce to wait until she was older before she dipped her toes into the industry.
“It’s possible for child performers to really find a lot that is positive within it, but it’s fraught with landmines,” he said in March 2024.
The “Hillbilly Elegy” director was also worried that folks would compare Bryce to his “iconic” roles in “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Happy Days.”
As for Bryce, she has no hard feelings about waiting to launch her acting career and told People, “I’m really glad that they did that because when I did start acting, it took a while to make a living. To be able to be like, ‘Oh, okay. I can actually support myself with this.’”
