Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara stepped onto the red carpet for the premiere of âThe Voice of Hind Rajabâ at the Venice International Film Festival. Their outing happened on September 3, and is the first time they have been photographed together at’ a red carpet event in 2025.

The rare outing was to promote their work on the film, and both served as executive producers. Kaouther Ben Hania directs the film, and the cast includes Motaz Malhees, Clara Khoury, and Amer Hlehel. It is a serious project, and neither Mara nor Phoenix was photographed smiling, but they did put on a united front by posing for photos next to each other and holding their arms around each other as they posed with the rest of the cast.
Mara and Phoenix both wore black for the event. She opted for a strapless black mini dress, and Phoenix wore a classic black suit and black collared shirt.
It was a big night for the couple, and the film has received critical acclaim. It received âwhat might be a film festival record 23-minute and 50-second ovation,â Deadline reports.

The couple first met on âHerâ in 2013, but first started dating around 2016 when they worked on the film âMary Magdalene.â They made their relationship debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017.
âThey were talking to one another nonstop,â a source said of their interactions at Cannes, People reports. âSmall talk between them. Then they went for their car and heâs holding her hand like it was unconscious. Like it fits. They seem a totally natural and easy couple.â
Mara and Phoenix have been together for almost a decade, but have been incredibly private about their romance. The actor made rare comments about Mara in an interview with Vanity Fair in November 2019. “She’s the only girl I ever looked up on the internet,” he said. “We were just friends, email friends.”
It is unclear when they got engaged, but in 2019, Mara was seen wearing an engagement ring. They are also parents to two children: their first son, River Phoenix, was born in September 2020. His name is a tribute to Joaquinâs late brother, who died in 1993.
In February 2024, Mara was photographed pregnant with their second child, People reports.
