Ryan Reynolds wants to do for the “Star Wars” franchise what he did for Marvel.
The “Deadpool” star says he’s pitched Disney an R-rated “Star Wars” movie.
In the May 23 episode of “The Box Office” podcast hosted by Scott Mendelson, Reynolds says, “I pitched to Disney, I said, âWhy donât we do an R-rated Star Wars property? It doesnât have to be overt, A+ characters. Thereâs a wide range of characters you could use.’”
Reynolds isn’t necessarily talking about going as far as he did with his “Deadpool” character. “And I donât mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion. I always wonder why studios donât want to just gamble on something like that,” he said in the podcast.
‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ Credited With Reviving the MCU
Reynolds’ only has to point to his latest “Deadpool” movie to back up his credibility for knowing what the audience wants.
According to Forbes, “Deadpool & Wolverine” had a worldwide box office tally of more than $1.3 billion, with a record-breaking opening weekend of $211-million.
And critics point out that Disney has dipped into R-rated territory a number of times in the past 15 years in an attempt “to get edgier.” 2023âs âGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3â had cuss words, and “Thor: Ragnarok” showed the Hulk naked from behind.
Ryan Reynolds Clarifies His ‘Star Wars’ Pitch
But unlike “Deadpool,” Reynolds doesn’t see himself starring in an R-rated “Star Wars” movie.
“Iâm not saying I want to be in it. That would be a bad fit,â Reynolds clarified. âIâd want to produce and write or be a part of behind the scenes. Those kinds of IP subsist really well on scarcity and surprise. We donât get scarcity really with Star Wars because of Disney+, but you can certainly still surprise people.â
‘Star Wars’ Franchise Has Several Films In the Works
Ryan Reynolds didn’t reveal in the podcast how his pitch was received by Disney, or whether or not he’ll be working on any “Star Wars” projects in the future.
But Disney does have several “Star Wars” movies in the works according to Variety.
Next up is “The Mandalorian and Grogu” which takes Pedro Pascalâs masked bounty hunter and the lovable so-called “Baby Yoda” from the Disney+ series to the big screen.
After that, Shawn Levy, who directed Reynolds in âDeadpool and Wolverine,â âThe Adam Projectâ and âFree Guy,â is making âStar Wars: Starfighter,â starring Ryan Gosling.
