‘S.W.A.T.’ Star Shemar Moore on the Show’s Latest Resurrection: ‘WE DON’T LOSE!!!!’

“S.W.A.T.” has died. “S.W.A.T.” is risen. “S.W.A.T.” will come again.

CBS may have gotten rid of two decently performing “FBI” spinoffs, the “Blue Bloods” and even fan favorite “S.W.A.T.” but it’s decidedly keeping its toes within their worlds.

The network – whose parent company, Paramount, is currently in the midst of an attempted sale to Skydance – recently announced a slew of new shows to premiere in the next television season. On top of that, a majority of them are spinoffs or continuations.

While fans will get to stay in the worlds of “FBI” and “Blue Bloods,” “S.W.A.T.” viewers may have to tune in elsewhere in order to get their fix.

Exiled No Moore

Late Sunday evening, Sony Pictures Television announced that it picked up a sequel series for “S.W.A.T.” called “S.W.A.T. Exiles.” Better yet, series stalwart Shemar Moore is attached to star, reprising his Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson role for the ten ordered episodes.

No home has been found for the new show.

The logline for “S.W.A.T. Exiles” goes like this: “After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel ‘Hondo’ Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits. Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.”

Moore has been public about his want to keep the original “S.W.A.T.” on the air. On March 7, the show – which was then in the middle of its eighth season – was announced to be ending. The actor took to his Instagram to announce his disappointment with  the decision.

His caption reads: “SWAT IS CANCELED…. AGAIN!!! After 8 seasons… CANCELED… maybe this time for good!!! But my momma didn’t raise NO QUITTER!!! No Matter what, I AM GRATEFUL n THANKFUL!!! Almost 31 years in this game of Hollywood… JOURNEY OF A DREAMER!!! To my Homies, Fans, Baby Girls, SWAT CREW, and Hollywood…. I say THANK YOU!!!! And “FILL THE GAPS n STAY LIQUID… ROLL SWAT”!!!!”

“S.W.A.T.” has previously been canceled during its sixth season even though its ratings were high. After just a few days of the cancellation announcement, CBS reversed the decision and gave the show a supposed seventh and final season. Once again, the network decided an eighth season was in order. That would end up being the last.

Going (Going) Back (Back) to Cali (Cali)

Sony Pictures Television doesn’t have any deals with distributors at the moment. However, streaming possibilities for “S.W.A.T. Exiles” could include Paramount+ (thanks to the ties the previous show has with CBS) or Netflix (where “S.W.A.T.” is currently available to stream).

No matter the case, the “S.W.A.T. Exiles” is set to begin production in Los Angeles this summer. This is good news for the city as California governor Gavin Newsom tries to bring productions back to the city after cheaper opportunities and tariffs made it too expensive to shoot in L.A.

Sony Pictures Television boasts that the new show would be “preserving jobs for the 200-person local production crew who have been instrumental to the success of the original series for the last eight seasons.”

Moore released a statement indicating his excitement to keep the “S.W.A.T.” series going: “My eight seasons on ‘S.W.A.T.’ have been epic and memorable. We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide. I am excited for this next generation and iteration of S.W.A.T. with Sony. Katherine Pope, Neal H. Moritz, Jason Ning, and I will keep the franchise, thrill ride action, heartfelt drama, and storytelling of S.W.A.T. alive. WE DON’T LOSE!!!! ROLL SWAT!!!”
