If you’re still mourning the loss of Mr. Big on “Sex and the City” spinoff “And Just Like That,” Sarah Jessica Parker is right there with you.
Season three of “And Just Like That” debuts on HBO Max at 9:00p.m. ET Thursday, May 29.
While Big died way back in the first episode of season one, Sarah Jessica Parker admits in a new interview with E! News that she still feels the loss.
“Big dying was really, really hard to do both professionally and personally,” Parker told E! “That’s not just a thread. It’s one of the main arteries that you would struggle to do without. It was really sad to say goodbye to that.”
“It’s not like I needed it for my own health or wellbeing,” she continued, “but that was a hugely wonderful story to tell for a lot of years.”
In fact, when she first read the script for the debut episode of “And Just Like That,” Parker said it shook her. “It just felt really untethered. It was really sad to say goodbye to that.”
Sarah Jessica Parker Speaks to Big and Carrie’s ‘Messy’ Relationship
Sarah Jessica Parker says she understands fans’ complicated emotions about Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big’s on-again-off-again relationship throughout the six-season run of “Sex and the City.”
“All of it was a mess, and all of it was wonderful,” she told E! News. “It was romantic, and it was a disaster. It was destructive, and it was healthy.”
Parker admits that saying goodbye to that storyline was especially difficult because, at the time, it was still unclear if John Corbett would reprise his role as Aiden Shaw on “And Just Like That.”
Corbett of course has returned, and a romance between Aiden and Carrie continues to be an important storyline in the show.
SJP’s Relationship with Carrie is Among Her Longest
While the relationship with Big is over and the relationship with Aiden remains full of question marks, the relationship between Sarah Jessica Parker and her alter-ego Carrie Bradshaw remains on solid ground.
The 60-year-old actress has been inhabiting Carrie’s world since âSex and the Cityâ first debuted on HBO in June of 1998. And even though itâs been more than a quarter of a century, SJP says sheâs not at all tired of her alter ego.
In an interview with Jenna Bush Hager on âToday with Jenna & Friends,â guest co-host Justin Sylvester asked, âWeâve watched Carrie date for so many years on our TV screens. Is there ever a moment where youâre like, âGirl, wake up!â Are you ever yelling at your character to do something different?â
To the obvious surprise of both Justin and Jenna, Sarah replied, âNo.â
âItâs been such a sort of extraordinary experience,â she went on to explain. âI try to describe it as being contractually obligated to play somebody else â be somebody else â for about 27 years, to behave in ways which would be illegal if I, as a married person with children, ways in which I would behave in the city or with men.â
What to Expect in Season 3 of ‘And Just Like That’
The trailer for season three of “And Just Like That” starts with Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie saying, “There’s nothing like summer in New York City, with its hot days and even hotter nights. Something new and unexpected always awaits.”
The trailer hints at new storylines, like Carrie writing her first fiction novel. And she and Aidan seem to be keeping in touch by way of BLANK postcards. While one scene indicates Aiden returns to New York City, another scene seems to hint at a flirtation between Carrie and a handsome neighbor.
The trailer ends with Carrie Bradshaw narrating, “Life is a story we get to write every day, and when the plot twists, we can choose to embrace a new chapter.”
You can catch season three of “And Just Like That” streaming on HBO Max starting at 9:00p.m. ET Thursday, May 29
