Sarah Jessica Parker has played alter ego Carrie Bradshaw for 27-years now.
And while starring in HBO series “Sex and the City” unquestionably changed her life, some of those changes have been easier than others.
SJP sat down with Alex Cooper on her “Call Her Daddy” podcast, where the 60-year-old star got real about the good, the bad.. and the ugly.
And it turns out it was the public scrutiny was the hardest thing to get used to. âBeing on a television show in particular ⦠was probably a real test of my coping mechanisms because I wasn’t prepared, and this was before social media. So I really wasn’t prepared for public commentary,â she told Cooper.
“At that time, I thought I was a fairly confident person ⦠but it really comes into question and is tested when youâre kind of filleted in a way,” she admitted. “We’re better for those kinds of experiences, but not all of us are good at it right away.â
Sarah Jessica Parker Recounts What ‘Made Her Cry’
The actress admits that criticisms of her physical appearance in the past have made her cry.
âIt was brought to my attention that a magazine said something really mean about who I am, how I look,â she said on the podcast. âAnd it was like a kick in the rubber parts. I was just like, âWhy is this a problem? ⦠Why do you seem to delight in saying it?â And I called two of my friends ⦠and I was sobbing because it felt so purposeful.â
âThat’s the only time I really cried about it. I think it was just an accumulation of maybe a season of that kind of commentary… it just felt so cruel,” she explained.
And Sarah Jessica Parker says perhaps even more shocking than the mean comments was the emotion behind them. “I couldn’t help but wonder, would you say it to my face? Would you?”
âI didn’t feel like I could sit in a room and someone would say to me, âYou’re really unattractive,â and then I could say, âWow. Well, first of all, that’s hard to hear. But second of all, why do you seem angry about it, or why do you feel it’s necessary to comment?â,â SJP elaborated.
Sarah Jessica Parker Talks SATC and AJLT Fashion
Alex Cooper channeled Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw with the outfit she wore on the podcast. And that sparked a conversation about fashion near the beginning of the podcast.
Sarah revealed that she has every single outfit she’s ever worn on both “Sex and the City” and the current spin-off “And Just Like That,” which is now in season three.
But while she owns them, she told Alex she never wears them. And her daughters never ask to borrow any of the iconic fashion from the show.
“They just don’t. They’re not.. they like clothing. And I’ll get a text a couple times a month asking can they purchase something, but they mostly buy their clothes used. Almost entirely. Which I think is pretty common now with girls, young women their age. They’ll be 16 later this month,” she said.
But there might be another reason why twin daughters Tabitha Hodge and Marion Loretta don’t ask to dip into their mom’s closet.
“They’ve never seen the show, so they haven’t an idea about what is available to them yet. But I give them stuff of mine all the time, all the time.”
