She shares solid advice on approaches to parenting. For her as a mom, it’s all about making kids financially independent. In a new interview on The E! News Sitdown with Bruce Bozzi (airing May 28), the “Sex and the City” icon shared the advice she gives her 22-year-old son, James Wilkie, who’s starting his acting career.

“I really want my children to be educated in the ways that are fulfilling to them,” Parker said. “I don’t think that there is one way to be an educated person or to be equipped to be an adult and try to fashion a life for yourself after what would be considered ‘finishing college’—let’s say 22 years old.”

Parker added, “You want for them to be pursuing things that are exciting and challenging and hard and gratifying and to be able to ultimately take care of themselves, support themselves — emotionally, financially, and that they can be in the world and be a reliable person to themselves and to other people. And so we talk about work like that.”

How SJP-Broderick Are Supporting Son’s Acting Career

James recently acted alongside his dad, Matthew Broderick, in a CBS Elsbeth episode. Broderick said his son was nervous but pulled through.

“It was great. We had two days together,” Broderick said. “It was really fun to hang around the craft service table and eat snacks. He was nervous but he got over that. We had a great couple of days.”

Parker also stressed that she wants her kids to know they have choices in life. “I’m curious to see what they all do, but I hope that they feel—I hope all young people feel—to some degree, that they have choices and that there isn’t one way,” she shared.

She and Broderick are also parents to 15-year-old twin daughters, Tabitha and Marion.

Speaking on Jenna and Friends back in April, Parker joked that people sometimes get the wrong impression of her girls.

“I find mine really likable,” she said. “It’s like you’re constantly in a control study, because you have one of this type and one of this type.” She added with a laugh, “This is a proper control study… they can kind of tell the story of the larger group.” And at the end of the day, Parker simply said: “They’re just really interesting. They’re, generally speaking, really kind and curious.”

Broderick and Parker have been married since 1997 and share three kids, building a strong family over the years.
