When the first Scream film was released three decades ago, it breathed life into a genre that was becoming tired and repetitive. The horror-comedy not only took Drew Barrymore — the best-known actor in the film — out within the first 10 minutes but broke a well-maintained wall with Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy), a slasher film fanatic who spouts the “rules” they need to follow to survive. After five sequels, it’s cemented its reputation as a solid horror film series. Given this, it’s understandable that one actor returning after a 29-year absence may feel slightly nervous.
Matthew Lillard Reveals His Biggest Fear About Returning for Scream 7
At 2025’s 90s Con, a popular panel consisted of Scream actors Matthew Lillard, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Dermot Mulroney, and Jamie Kennedy. When a fan asked Lillard about his role in the upcoming Scream 7, he admitted he had some worries.
“I can’t say anything about it, obviously, but I am very excited and slightly terrified to be back,” he said. “Because all I can do is really screw up a legacy that we have.” As several people yelled out, “Never!” and Lillard responded with, “Yes, I could really suck, so that’s my fear. My fear is coming back and sort of tarnishing something that I could never have touched and been just fine. So I hope I don’t eff it up for everyone.”
Ironically, earlier in the panel, he’d told fans that everyone makes mistakes and that feelings of inferiority don’t help you in the long run. “So much of your life is filled with this weird self-doubt, right?” he told the crowd. “I have it, we all have it, this idea of, like, I’m not good enough, Imposter Syndrome, and it doesn’t serve you. And the reality is that the more you understand you’re supposed to make mistakes, the more you understand that life is about growing rather than being fully developed.”
‘Scream 7’ to Feature Several Characters Who Met Their Demise
Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original Scream film and sequels 2 and 4, is directing Scream 7. Fan favorites Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown are all returning. Despite admitting he’s not supposed to post about the film, Williamson can’t seem to help himself. To fans’ delight, he’s made two Instagram posts — so far — telling the world that Scream 7 is filming and when it’ll hit theaters.
Scream 7 is set to be released on February 27, 2026, and little is known about the film’s plot yet. It is known that Lillard’s Stu Macher, Arquette’s Dewey Riley, Ulrich’s Billy Loomis, and Scott Foley’s Roman Bridger are all returningâdespite them all having been killed in previous Scream films. Ulrich has previously returned as a hallucination of his daughter, Samantha Carpenter. Still, we have no idea how he appears this time with Melissa Barrera, the actress who portrayed her, not returning. With a year to go, fans must be patient for more information.
