Sean “Diddy” Combs was not happy about the release of Sean Combs: The Reckoning, a Netflix documentary produced by his longtime rival, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. Combs’ lawyers slammed the documentary series ahead of its release. They claimed that the filmmakers did not legally obtain some footage of Combs. While Jackson said he thought Combs would like the series, the disgraced mogul is reportedly considering pursuing legal action.

Viewers of Sean Combs: The Reckoning watch never-before-seen footage of Combs in the days leading up to his arrest. In the footage, Combs speaks to his lawyers on the phone and meets with fans. While the documentary’s creative team says the footage was obtained legally, Combs’ lawyers claim it wasn’t. The mogul is reportedly considering legal action.

“Sean Combs and his team are still pondering their legal options over the Netflix docuseries and the stolen footage,” a source told <a href=”https://deadline.com/2025/12/diddy-netflix-docuseries-lawsuit-threat-1236658147/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Deadline.

Combs’ lawyers made a similar statement in a cease and desist they filed on Dec. 1. The series came out on Netflix one day later.

“As you are undoubtedly aware, Mr. Combs has not hesitated to take legal action against media entities and others who violate his rights, and he will not hesitate to do so against Netflix,” the document reads.

Combs’ legal team has been pushing back against the docuseries since long before its release. They have repeatedly stated that it features stolen footage.

“Netflix’s so-called ‘documentary’ is a shameful hit piece,” Combs’ PR Rep Juda Engelmayer told <a target=”_blank” href=”https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/sean-diddy-combs-slams-50-cent-netflix-documentary-illegal-1236438361/” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>The Hollywood Reporter. “Today’s GMA teaser confirms that Netflix relied on stolen footage that was never authorized for release.”

Engelmayer also criticized Jackson’s involvement in the documentary. He believes this is a breach of trust by Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos

“It is equally staggering that Netflix handed creative control to Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson — a longtime adversary with a personal vendetta who has spent too much time slandering Mr. Combs. Beyond the legal issues, this is a personal breach of trust.”

The filmmakers say they obtained the footage legally

Jackson and director Alexandria Stapleton insist they obtained the footage legally. They will not reveal their source, though.

“It came to us,” Stapleton said on Good Morning America. “We obtained the footage legally and have the necessary rights. We moved heaven and earth to keep the filmmaker’s identity confidential. One thing about Sean Combs is that he’s always filming himself, and it’s been an obsession throughout the decades. We also reached out to Sean Combs’ legal team for an interview and comment multiple times, but did not hear back.”

Netflix has also defended the project.

“The project has no ties to any past conversations between Sean Combs and Netflix,” a spokesperson for the streaming service said. “The footage of Combs leading up to his indictment and arrest were legally obtained. This is not a hit piece or an act of retribution. Curtis Jackson is an executive producer but does not have creative control. No one was paid to participate.”
