Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ trial began on May 5, 2025. Before this, Combs, his defense team, and the prosecution attended a number of pre-trial hearings. While Judge Arun Subramanian served Combs and his lawyers with several legal blows, he also made a ruling that was a win for them. Here’s what Judge Subramanian ruled before the trial.

Past allegations of sexual assault against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs will not be allowed at trial

During an April 18 hearing, Judge Subramanian made two significant rulings. One came as a blow to Combs’ team. They wanted to delay the trial, but he ruled it would begin on May 5 as previously scheduled.

Another one of the rulings was much more favorable to Combs. His lawyers argued that Combs has not been criminally charged with sexual assault, so prosecutors should not be able to introduce those allegations to a trial on sex trafficking and racketeering.

“The Court should require the government to try the case it charged and prove that case to the jury beyond a reasonable doubt,” the filing read, per <a target=”_blank” href=”https://people.com/diddy-lawyers-sexual-assault-allegation-excluded-trial-11710841″ rel=”noreferrer noopener”>People. “The government should not be permitted to pollute the trial with decades of dirt and invite a conviction based on propensity evidence with no proper purpose by painting Mr. Combs as a bad guy who must have committed the charged crimes.”

In this case, the judge sided with the defense. He ruled that allegations of sexual assault against Combs would not be allowed during the trial. This came as a major win for Combs. His lawyers said these allegations could be “unfairly prejudicial” or “mislead the jury.”
