Seth Meyers Reveals When He Thinks ‘Late-Night’ Will End

In a new interview with Variety, the longtime “Late Night with Seth Meyers” host opened up about his concerns for late-night TV, admitting he’s not sure the genre will survive another 10 years. “It does bum me out,” Meyers admitted, as he reflected on the changing landscape of entertainment — and what that might mean for the next generation of hosts.

Seth Meyers Says the Future of Network Late-Night Hosts Looks Uncertain

“Unless some major sea change happens, I don’t think there’s going to be a whole new wave of network hosts, in the way there always has been,” Meyers, 51, told Variety.

Meyers, who has hosted Late Night since 2014, added, “I feel very fortunate about when I got in — both at SNL and with Late Night. But it does bum me out that other people won’t have exactly this opportunity. … If you’re a great lover of the institution of late-night talk shows, there’s probably some sadness in your future.”

Seth Meyers Says Podcasts and Streaming Are Keeping Comedy Alive

Meyers also noted that the growing popularity of podcasts and streaming platforms is playing a significant role in how audiences are moving away from traditional late-night TV.

“Podcasts have as big of a reach as late-night shows ever had,” he said. “Interesting voices are always going to use the technologies they have at hand to find an audience. If you love funny people telling funny jokes and talking to people in interesting ways, that’s always going to be available.”

Jimmy Kimmel Had Made the Same Prediction

Meyers isn’t the only late-night host sounding the alarm. His comments echo a similar prediction from fellow host Jimmy Kimmel, who shared his concerns about the future of late-night TV during an appearance on the Politickin’ podcast earlier this year.

“It used to be Johnny Carson was the only thing on at 11:30 and so everybody watched,” Kimmel said. “But now there are so many options, and maybe even more significantly, the fact that people are able to easily watch your monologue online the next day, it really cancels out the need to watch it when it’s on the air. And once people stop watching it when it’s on the air, networks are gonna stop paying for it to be made.”

Kimmel has already announced plans to take this summer off — his fifth year in a row doing so.

According to Deadline, guest hosts for Jimmy Kimmel Live! This summer’s lineup includes Anthony Anderson, Nicole Byer, Chris Distefano, Kumail Nanjiani, Fortune Feimster, Alan Cumming, and Jelly Roll.

For now, fans can still catch Jimmy Kimmel Live! Weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on ABC, and Late Night with Seth Meyers at 12:35 a.m. ET on NBC.
