Sissy Spacek grew emotional while remembering her late friend and coâstar Diane Keaton, recalling a touching and playful moment on the set of the 1986 film âCrimes of the Heart.â
In an interview with Ethan Hawke for Interview magazine published on Monday, Nov. 17, Spacek described how Keatonâs kindness and sense of humor made a big impression â especially on Spacekâs young daughter.
Spacek said that during filming, she and Jessica Lange shared a house-turned-dressingâarea close to the set.
Because both were working mothers â Spacek had her daughter, Schuyler â that arrangement created a warm, familial atmosphere.
Keaton, meanwhile, stayed nearby in a more private space, balancing respect for her friendsâ parenting time with her own need for solitude.
The Sweet Moment Keaton Had With Spacek’s Daughter
One memory stood out above all. Spacek recalled her daughter Schuyler, then about four or five, playing with a pretend doctorâs kit.
âDiane came in and saw her,â she began. âShe fell to the floor and rolled over on her back and went, âOh my arm!ââ
Spacek added, âSchuyler was looking down at her, and within the next 15 minutes, she was covered in candy pills and Band-Aids. Iâll never forget that. I get teary when I think about it. Thatâs Diane Keaton.â
The moment clearly moved Spacek, as she mentioned she gets “teary” while thinking of it.
It resonated as more than a prank â it was a symbol of Keatonâs caring nature and her gift for making people, especially children, feel seen and loved.
In âCrimes of the Heart,â Spacek, Keaton, and Lange played three very different Magrath sisters, navigating trauma, reconciliation and shared history.
âWatching âCrimes of the Heartâ was wonderful â all these women loving each other,â Hawk told the 75-year-old.
She added, âWe still love each other.â
Keaton Passed Away in October
Hollywood was in mourning when the sad news of Keaton’s passing broke in October.
Her family put out a statement with PEOPLE stating she died from pneumonia.
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane,” it read.
It continued by telling friends and fans how they can remember Keaton if they so wish.
“She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her,” the statement concluded.
