HBO’s “The Sopranos” is often touted as one of the best series of all time. It’s been 18 years since it ended, and the show’s series finale is still widely discussed today because it doesn’t give a definitive answer about what happened to its main character, Tony Soprano, played by James Gandolfini, who passed away in 2013.

Now, one of the former cast members of the series, Robert Patrick, is responding to fan speculation. Patrick, most recently known for roles in “Tulsa King” and “Peacemaker,” appeared in three episodes of “The Sopranos.”

Patrick joined “The Sopranos” during the show’s second season as Davey Scatino. Regarding the show’s cut-to-black finale, it’s widely speculated that his character killed Tony Soprano, despite being absent from the series for several years. As mentioned, it’s unclear if the titular character dies, but the way the show concludes leads many to assume so.

Patrick spoke to TV Line about the belief that Scatino killed the mob boss. He said, “I think that was interesting. Did that really get a lot of traction? David Chase is the only one who knows. I was never contacted about it. I don’t know.”

In other words, Patrick did not play Soprano’s assassin in the series finale of the hit HBO show. He continued, “Was there a guy that might have looked like me, or people thought that it was me? It’s interesting. Yeah, I wonder. I don’t know. I feel blessed that people would really still be thinking about my character at the end. But boy, what a great experience.”

As fans of “The Sopranos” know, Patrick’s character in the show departed New Jersey after racking up a massive gambling debt. The theory is that he may have returned to the Garden State to seek revenge on his former friend, as he blamed Soprano for his misfortune.

The Show’s Creator Has Opened Up About the Finale

As Patrick alluded to, David Chase created “The Sopranos.” Since the show ended, he has been somewhat open about his intentions regarding the show’s cut-to-black finale. He spoke to The Hollywood Reporter in 2021 and revealed that he had a different ending in mind.

Chase said, “The scene I had in my mind was not that scene. Nor did I think of cutting to black. I had a scene in which Tony comes back from a meeting in New York in his car. At the beginning of every show, he came from New York into New Jersey, and the last scene could be him coming from New Jersey back into New York for a meeting at which he was going to be killed.”

He was then asked when the idea for the end of “The Sopranos” came to him. Chase responded, “Yeah. But I think I had this notion — I was driving on Ocean Park Boulevard near the airport, and I saw a little restaurant. It was kind of like a shack that served breakfast. And for some reason, I thought, ‘Tony should get it in a place like that.’ Why? I don’t know. That was, like, two years before.”

Fans of “The Sopranos” should know that the 2021 film, “The Many Saints of Newark,” serves as a prequel to the show. Chase worked on the screenplay for the movie.
