‘Spider-Man’ Actor Passes Away & Tributes Pour In

Reports surfaced on June 21st that Jack Betts, best known for playing Henry Balkan in the 2002 “Spider-Man” movie, had passed away. The legendary actor was 96. 

According to TMZ, Dean Sullivan, the nephew of Jack Betts, announced the news of his passing. The report states that the actor passed away in his sleep on June 19th at his home in Los Osos, California. It is also unclear if he was suffering from any health conditions at the time. 

Jack Betts is survived by his sister, Joan. He also leaves behind two nieces, Lynne and Gail. 


Jack Betts Leaves Behind a Stellar Hollywood Legacy

Jack Betts, born in 1929, wasn’t only one of the stars of the 2002 “Spider-Man” movie. He graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Theatre, and in 1953, he landed a role in “Richard III” on Broadway. Notably, this version starred José Ferrer. 

Regarding film, Jack began with a role in the 1959 thriller “The Bloody Broad.” From there, he made several television appearances, including episodes of “Bonanza,” “General Hospital,” and “Perry Mason” in the 1960s. 

Jack Betts continued working steadily in Hollywood with several appearances on various television shows. However, as mentioned, his biggest claim to fame came when he appeared alongside Tobey Maguire in the “Spider-Man” movie. According to IMDB, his last credited role was in a 2019 episode of  “Good Trouble.”


Tributes Are Pouring In

Jack Betts may not have been the most famous actor, but he was beloved by many. Naturally, many are taking to social media to not only remember the work he leaves behind, but the man he was. One fan said, “Man, Jack Betts was like that reliable carburetor that just kept on running decade after decade.”

The post on X went on, “From spaghetti Westerns to Spider-Man, he was the character actor equivalent of my old Osborne 2 – not always in the spotlight but always getting the job done.”

Another fan on X said, “Jack Betts from One Life to Live, who played Dr. Ivan Kipling, has passed away at the age of 96. He will always be remembered for the storyline he had with Judith Light, who played Karen Wolek.”

Someone else replied to The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “RIP to a legend. Jack Betts brought so much to the screen, from gritty westerns to comic book charm.”

Additionally, a notable “Everybody Loves Raymond” fan account paid tribute to Jack. Notably, he was on an episode of the show and was a dear friend of Doris Roberts.
