George Lucas is finally heading to San Diego Comic-Con for the very first time!
The âStar Warsâ creator will appear on Sunday, July 27, but he’s not going to be talking intergalactic battles, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The 80-year-old filmmaker will lead a panel focused on the upcoming Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, the massive new museum he co-founded with wife Mellody Hobson thatâs set to open in 2026 in Los Angelesâ Exposition Park. Lucas will be joined onstage by director Guillermo del Toro, âStar Warsâ concept artist Doug Chiang, and moderator Queen Latifah.
David Glanzer, chief communications and strategy officer of Comic-Con, expressed how excited he was for Lucas to make his Comic-Con debut.
âWe are beyond thrilled to welcome George Lucas to Comic-Con for the very first time,â he said. âNearly five decades ago, Star Wars made one of its earliest public appearances at our convention, along with a booth featuring Howard Chaykinâs now legendary Star Wars poster as a promotional item.”
Granzer added, âNow, to have Mr. Lucas return, this time to debut the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, is a true full-circle moment. His lifelong dedication to visual storytelling and world-building resonates deeply with us and our community, and the museumâs mission to celebrate narrative art in all its forms perfectly reflects what Comic-Con has championed from the very beginning.â
The Lucas’ Museum Will Be Expansive
The 11-acre campus will be big!
It will occupy a 300,000-square-foot building and offer numerous amenities for guests. The museum dished on its update in a recent Instagram post.
“Construction is coming along beautifully on the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art,” the post began.
It added, “Opening in 2026 in Los Angelesâs Exposition Park, the Lucas Museum will be a first-of-its-kind institution dedicated to illustrated storytelling across time, cultures, and media.”
The museum’s mission “is to inspire and connect people through the exploration of visual stories and their influences in society.”
Lucas Had a Battle While Bringing His Vision to Life
While the original Star Wars films are now in the history books as classic cinema, it wasn’t always easy for Lucas.
He talked to the official Star Wars website in May 2020 about some of his struggles while bringing his vision to life!
He discussed while his first film was wildly successful, he wanted to have more control going forward.
âWell, to be very honest, the most challenging aspect was paying for it,â he said. âIn order to be able to take control of the movie, I had to pay for it myself. And in order to do that, I did something my father told me never to do, which was to borrow money. But there wasnât much I could do because I only had maybe half of the money to make the movie so I had to borrow the other half, which put a lot of pressure on me.â
