Starfield review bombed over £9 quest that takes 15 minutes to finish

£9 is too much for parts of a quest says Starfield fans (YouTube)

A new quest for Starfield has not gone down as well with fans as Bethesda would’ve hoped, as its second part is stuck behind a paywall.

Not long after Starfield launched last September, Bethesda promised frequent updates including city maps, a new difficulty setting, and land vehicles – some of which were added in the May update.

A surprise update came over the weekend though, when a new free quest, made by Bethesda themselves, was announced during the premiere of the first trailer for the Shattered Space DLC expansion at the Xbox Games Showcase.

That’s great, but the second part of the quest line is locked behind a £8.99 paywall and fans are not impressed – and they’re worried that this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The most important parts of this weekend’s update is the introduction of official mod support in Starfield, through its Creation Club, and a new quest called Trackers Alliance.

The first part of this quest – The Starjacker – comes free with the update and sees you become a bounty hunter.

‘Trackers Alliance establishes the first of several missions enabling you to live your best bounty-hunting life,’ say the Bethesda blog.

That will only get you so far though, as the second part of the quest – The Vulture -is only playable if you pay 700 credits, which can be obtained by purchasing 1,000 credits at £8.99.

This has sparked discussion on social media, where most fans are against putting parts of a quest behind a paywall.

In a Reddit thread titled ‘$7 is too much for a quest,’ Dartzinho V says:

‘I see a lot of people here arguing that the new microtransactions were to be expected due to Bethesda’s history, and I agree with that part. However, I still think it’s absolutely outrageous that they’re selling individual quests instead of the whole quest line.’

Other fans highlight that The Vulture quest only takes 15-20 minutes to complete.

As a result, players are review bombing Starfield on Steam, where a substantial hike in negative reviews have been posted.

Fans’ criticism about parts of a quest line being locked behind a paywall is understandable, but at least with the addition of official mod support there will be a lot of free content to download on top of what already exists.

Unfortunately land vehicles haven’t been added to Starfield yet, which looks increasingly likely to be part of the Shattered Space expansion.

When that will be released nobody knows, as the new trailer only states that Shattered Space is coming out sometime in 2024.

Since the release of the Shattered Space trailer and new update, recent reviews for Starfield has plummeted (Steam)
