Stellar Blade dev hints at DLC, sequel, PC version, and… 2B from NieR

After selling over one million units worldwide, developer Shift Up has outlined its future plans for PS5 exclusive Stellar Blade.

Nobody knew quite what to make of Stellar Blade when it first launched in April, with all the controversy over how the main character looks and Korean developer Shift Up being entirely untested when it comes to console action games.

Although protagonist EVE is still a point of contention for many, the game itself was very good and now Shift Up are talking about what comes next, and it seems to be quite a lot.

There’d already been whispers of a PC version, DLC, and a sequel but now the team has offered up a full roadmap for the franchise during a recent press conference.

At the event, Shift Up claimed Stellar Blade has now sold over one million copies worldwide, and outlined how it plans to support the title moving forward.

Along with the already released boss challenge mode, the roadmap includes a photo mode in August, new character skins in October, and an IP collaboration for the end of the year.

While there’s no details on the IP collaboration, as it’s ‘under review’, the studio’s other title, Goddess Of Victory: Nikke, staged a crossover with NieR:Automata last year, so it’s possible 2B could hop on over to Stellar Blade as well.

A crossover with NieR seems particular likely because CEO Hyung-Tae Kim and NieR creator Yoko Taro are friends, with both of discussing their preference for sexualised women in their games during a recent interview on IGN.

There’s also already been a crossover between NieR and Shift Up’s mobile game Goddess Of Victory: Nikke, which makes it seem even more inevitable.

The roadmap also mentions DLC, presumably story-based, and a sequel – although there’s no indication of when these will be released.

During the conference, Shift Up CFO Jaerwoo Ahn said he’s ‘currently looking at a PC version of Stellar Blade’ but that he cannot comment further due to a ‘contractual relationship’ – presumably with Sony.

As translated by VGC, Kim added: ‘We are considering a PC version of Stellar Blade, but we cannot comment on the exact timing or whether or not it will be released due to the contractual relationship.’

Shift Up is clearly aiming to turn Stellar Blade into an ongoing franchise but whether it remain a PlayStation console exclusive remains to be seen.
