“Mrs. Soffel” was received with mixed reviews when it came out, though many critics praised its striking visuals and compelling performances. Film critic Vincent Canby wrote in his review for The New York Times that the film was “well cast by Miss Armstrong with Diane Keaton as Mrs. Soffel, Mel Gibson as Ed Biddle, Matthew Modine – so fine in the title role of ‘Birdy’ – as Jack Biddle and Ed Herrmann as Kate’s stuffy husband, Peter.”

In the user reviews for the film on IMDb, one user called the film “one of the best American films of the 1980’s.” They also praised Keaton for her performance. “Diane Keaton gives a remarkably complex and nuanced performance. The film is almost unimaginable with her in the leading role.”

Another user called the film an “underestimated beauty” in their review. The user continued, “‘Mrs. Soffel,’ a movie much overlooked in the mid 1980s, deserves a reevaluation at present. With the advent of so many successful period films, ‘Mrs. Soffel’ can be seen as a predecessor of sorts.”

Revisiting Keaton’s filmography is one way to celebrate her memory. She is best known for her roles in “Annie Hall,” “The Godfather” trilogy, “Something’s Gotta Give,” and “The First Wives Club.”

Modine Shares His Heartwarming Sentiment & Fans React

Everyone felt the devastating loss of the beloved actress. Along with touching tributes shared by her close friends and family, those in Hollywood have also been sharing their words of celebration online. On X, Modine posted an old photo from “Mrs. Soffel” featuring himself with Keaton and Gibson. His caption reads:

“Every so often a person comes along that defies all definition. They’re a wonderful mystery. Sometimes they go digging within themselves attempting to discover something hidden inside — and then discover something magical — which they keep private. Diane was like that. All that and more — all packaged behind her gorgeous smile, razor sharp wit, and deliciously infectious laugh. God speed, sister. #RIPDianeKeaton #DianeKeaton #MrsSoffel
