Suranne Jones hit screens alongside Jodie Comer in Doctor Foster just over a decade ago – but could now be returning to the BBC for a new season.

The mad melodrama stars Jones as local GP Gemma Foster, whose marriage to husband Simon, played by Bertie Carvel, is upended by the discovery of a single hair.

Not any hair, but a long blonde strand of it on his scarf. To the never-not-brunette Gemma, this is as good as a confession of adultery.

So she sets about finding out who the mysterious blonde woman her husband is stepping out on her with might actually be. As she embarks on that hunt for the truth, other secrets emerge along the way.

The owner of the blonde hair? One Jodie Comer, before she became a household name as the star of Killing Eve

Penned by Mike Bartlett, the thriller saw Jones’ character go off the deep end in pursuit of revenge for what her husband did, with the actress winning a Bafta for her performance in the role.

It has now been reported that another series of Doctor Foster is in the works, in which Gemma’s son Tom (Tom Taylor) returns home as an adult, after the epic fallout of his parents’ marriage, having previously run away.

A TV insider told The Sun: ‘There was always a sense of unfinished business with Doctor Foster, as the storyline could easily roll on and on.

‘It was felt enough time had passed since its last outing – but not too much that fans weren’t still eager to return to the show.’

Filming on the new series is reportedly starting next year, with plans for the episodes to hit screens at the end of 2026 or early 2027.

Critics had nothing but praise at the time, with The Guardian hailing it a ‘brilliant and gripping portrait of a marriage’.

When Doctor Foster finished its second season run, Bartlett said at the time that there would not be a third run of the drama.

‘We’re definitely done and we’re all doing – certainly they are doing – amazing things.

‘Each of the two series feel like two different novels to me, so it’s not like there’s anything incomplete.

‘It would only come back if we had the right story to tell in the right way – and I don’t have a burning desire to find that story,’ he told The Sun.

The BBC declined to comment when contacted by Metro.

Doctor Foster is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
