Before her death in 2023, Suzanne Somers was already thinking about how she could live on â not just through her work, but through technology. Now, her husband Alan Hamel has revealed that the late actress had the idea for an artificial intelligence âtwinâ years before AI became a household concept. The project, which has since been completed, gives fans a chance to interact with a lifelike version of Somers that looks and sounds just like her.
Suzanne Somersâ AI ‘Twin’ Was Her Idea Decades Before Her Death
Somers may have passed away in 2023, but her husband, Hamel, says her presence will live on in a way she personally envisioned â through artificial intelligence. In a new interview with People, Hamel revealed that the late actress had planned the creation of her own AI âtwinâ long before her death from breast cancer.
âIt was Suzanneâs idea,â Hamel said. âAnd she said, âI think we should do that.â She said, âI think itâll be very interesting and weâll provide a service to my fans and to people who have been reading my books who really want and need information about their health.â She said, âLetâs do it.â So thatâs the reason we did it. And so I love being able to fulfill her wish.â
Hamel explained that he and Somers first discussed the concept in the 1980s after becoming friends with futurist Ray Kurzweil, who introduced them to the idea. âBill Gates described Ray Kurzweil as the smartest man on the planet, which he is,â Hamel recalled. âAnd he became our friend 30-some years ago and we talked about this. We knew it was coming. It took decades to happen, but he knew it was going to happen, and he shared that information with us.â
Now, working with AI company Hollo, Hamel has made that dream a reality.
Alan Hamel Shares Details of Suzanne Somersâ Digital Twin
Hamel said the AI version of Somers, which he demonstrated earlier this year at the Roth 25 AI conference, looks and sounds exactly like his late wife.
âIt was Suzanne,â he told the outlet. âAnd I asked her a few questions and she answered them, and it blew me and everybody else away. When you look at the finished one next to the real Suzanne, you canât tell the difference. Itâs amazing. And I mean, Iâve been with Suzanne for 55 years, so I know what her face looks like, and when I just look at the two of them side by side, I really canât tell which one is the real and which one is the AI.â
The AI model was trained using all 27 of Somersâ books, along with hundreds of her interviews. âSheâs really ready to be able to be asked any question at all and be able to answer it, because the answer will be within her,â Hamel said.
Somers, best known for playing Chrissy Snow on âThreeâs Company,â died on October 15, 2023, at age 76 after battling breast cancer for over two decades. She and Hamel, who met in the 1960s on the game show âThe Anniversary Game,â were married for nearly 44 years.
Alan Hamel Finds Love Again After Loss
While continuing to honor Somersâ legacy, Hamel has also found new companionship. The 89-year-old confirmed earlier this year that heâs dating Joanna Cassidy, the 80-year-old actress best known for her role in âBlade Runnerâ â and a former guest on his television show decades ago.
âThere was that connection,â Hamel told Fox News Digital. âAnd weâve spent a lot of time being with each other, which is great. And Iâm almost 10 years older than her, so Iâm Joannaâs older man. Sheâs always wanted an older man. And I came along.â
Cassidy, who also co-starred with Somers in the 1985 miniseries âHollywood Wives,â said their relationship felt natural. âIt was quite natural,â she said. âI found myself falling into a place that felt very comfortable, I felt very much at ease. I think our first date lasted three days.â
Hamel described this new phase of life as âthe cocktail hourâ of their lives. âWeâve both relaxed into it,â he said, adding that he still carries deep affection for Somers and her lasting impact â both in his life and, soon, in digital form.
