aylor Swift celebrates with Travis Kelce #87 of the Kansas City Chiefs

Taylor Swift’s Rhode Island mansion has always been part of her story — from the sweeping ocean views to the star-studded Fourth of July parties that became the stuff of legend. Now, as fans speculate about wedding plans with Travis Kelce, there’s another headline-grabbing attention: Swift is facing a hefty tax hike. A new law, already nicknamed the “Taylor Swift Tax,” means she’ll be shelling out more than $100,000 extra every year just to keep the place.

The ‘Taylor Swift Tax’ Explained

In 2013, Swift purchased her Watch Hill mansion, famously known as “High Watch,” for $17.75 million in cash. Built in 1929, the estate has been owned by socialites like Rebekah Harkness and has since become one of Swift’s favorite retreats. The home features eight bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, sprawling gardens, and a pool — all perched on 5.23 acres of prime Rhode Island coastline.

But Swift’s Rhode Island retreat is about to get a lot pricier to keep. Starting in July 2026, the state will roll out a new surcharge on luxury homes worth more than $1 million that sit empty for much of the year. Locals are already calling it the “Taylor Swift Tax,” thanks to her famous Watch Hill mansion.

Right now, Swift shells out more than $200,000 a year in property taxes, according to SheKnows. Once the new law kicks in, that number will jump to about $337,000 — meaning she’ll be paying roughly $136,000 more just to hold onto the home.

While lawmakers stress that the tax isn’t aimed specifically at Swift, her famous Watch Hill property has become the poster child for the policy, which aims to generate revenue for affordable housing initiatives.

Will Tayvis Marry in Rhode Island?

Despite the looming tax hike, Swift seems more focused on her personal life. According to Page Six, she and Kansas City Chiefs star Kelce are planning to tie the knot in Rhode Island next summer.

“They are getting married next summer in Rhode Island. She is in a hurry to have children,” a source told the outlet.

Governor Dan McKee even weighed in, cheering on the possibility. “Rhode Island has some of the best wedding venues in the world, just saying,” McKee quipped in a social media repost of the couple’s rumored announcement.

Swift is also in the middle of a $1.7 million renovation of “High Watch,” according to a Providence Journal building permit. Plans include a new wing with a large bedroom, additional bathrooms, and a kitchen upgrade — perfect for hosting wedding guests if the rumors prove true.
