Ed and Lorraine Warren’s last big screen outing does not mark the end of The Conjuring franchise, it has been revealed.

Last Rites was released earlier this month and saw Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return to their roles as Ed and Lorraine following The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It in 2021.

The latest film is based on the real-life investigations of the Smurl haunting case, and is reportedly the final film in the main Conjuring franchise.

Despite this, it has been announced that a TV series is on the way from HBO Max – and it has its showrunner and writers.

Atomic Monster, owned by original film creator James Wan, will executive produce the show.

Variety reports that Supernatural’s Nancy Won is attached as showrunner, while Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires will pen the series.

The Conjuring TV series was first reported to be in development in 2023, and while exact plot details are still firmly under wraps, it is said to continue the story first laid out in the film franchise.

Casting details are yet to be revealed, so it is unclear whether Farmiga and Wilson will reprise their roles as the Warrens.

The first Conjuring film was released in 2013, and was followed by three sequels and spin-offs such as Anabelle and The Nun.

It is the highest-grossing horror franchise to date, grossing a combined $2.6billion (£1.9bn) ahaonst a budget of $262million (£192m).

Just weeks after its release, Last Rites has become the highest-earning film of the bunch, raking in $332.9m (£244.5m) worldwide so far.

It has divided critics, garnering a 56% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with the consensus reading: ‘Purportedly Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson’s final outing as the Warrens, Last Rites underwhelms as a climactic chapter for The Conjuring but solidly upholds the franchise’s spooky standards.’

‘It depends whether it’s upside down or not, whether they’re crosses or upside down crosses. I guess it depends on how I show you my leg.

‘That happens every time we do it. It’s just these inexplicable bruising shapes that occur on my body. It is what it is.’
