‘The Gilded Age’ Season 3 Finale Will Call ‘Everything Into Question’ Promises Showrunner

Trust, betrayal, and life-or-death stakes are colliding in “The Gilded Age” season 3 finale, according to showrunner Sonja Warfield. The 1880s period drama has spent the season building toward a high-society showdown, and now it’s time for the payoff. In the aftermath of a shocking shooting at the Russell mansion, relationships will be tested, social norms will be challenged, and unexpected alliances will form when the HBO hit wraps its third season.

‘The Gilded Age’ Season 3 Finale Will Include Gunfire, Heartbreak, and a Fight for Survival

The finale opens with George Russell (Morgan Spector) gravely wounded after a gunman storms his home. Dr. William Kirkland (Jordan Donica), visiting fiancée Peggy Scott (Denée Benton) across the street, races to save his life.

Meanwhile, George’s son Larry (Harry Richardson) tries to mend his broken engagement to Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), who ended things after discovering Larry had spent a night at what she called “a house of ill repute.”

“Trust is vital in all relationships, and when that falters, it calls everything into question,” Warfield told TV Insider.

Peggy faces her own crisis when William’s high-society mother, Elizabeth (Phylicia Rashad), exposes a painful secret about her past — a secret Peggy had planned to share herself. “It’s heartbreaking that Elizabeth beat her to it,” Warfield said. “This presents an enormous hurdle in their relationship.”

Bertha Russell’s Bold Ball and Shake-Ups at the Van Rhijns

In Newport, Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) hosts her annual ball, with added prestige thanks to the attendance of the Duke and Duchess of Buckingham (Ben Lamb and Taissa Farmiga). While their marriage began as a transactional deal, Bertha’s intervention has helped the couple grow closer.

“She challenged Gladys to ask questions about the Duke’s estate and put Hector’s overbearing sister in her place,” Warfield revealed, noting that Bertha also defies long-held traditions by allowing scandal-shadowed women into society events.

Elsewhere, Oscar van Rhijn (Blake Ritson) makes a risky marriage proposal to a wealthy widow, Agnes van Rhijn (Christine Baranski) receives a surprising historical honor, and former footman Jack Trotter (Ben Ahlers) continues his climb into the upper class — potentially at the expense of old loyalties.

Warfield hints the finale will end with “a nice surprise” for the Russell family, but also “a huge shock for Bertha” that could change her life when the series returns.

“The Gilded Age” season 3 finale airs Sunday, August 10, at 9/8c on HBO.
