Beloved director Rob Reiner was a star in his own right, but he was also the son of Hollywood royalty. His parents, Carl and Estelle Reiner, were both industry titans who left behind stunning legacies of their own. Over the years, they both took on unforgettable roles that moviegoers still love to this day. As fans mourn the tragic death of Rob and his wife, Michele Singer, we’re looking back at some of the legendary work the director’s parents did during their own Hollywood heyday.
Estelle Reiner Delivered an Icon Line in a Classic Comedy
GettyAlthough Estelle’s career focus leaned more towards music than film, she did take on small movie roles over the years. In particular, she delivered a truly iconic performance in “When Harry Met Sally.” Estelle appeared as a patron in the memorable diner scene, and with one line, she cemented her place in that movie’s most beloved references. “I’ll have what she’s having,” Estelle’s character said to her server.
In 2014, Rob shared his take on Estelle’s movie history-making line. “Billy Crystal actually came up with that line, and it was the last line in the scene,” the director explained on the AOL Build series. As he went on to share, Rob told his mother how important it was for the line to garner a laugh from the audience, and gently let her know it might not make the final cut of the film if the delivery wasn’t quite right.
Of course, it all turned out perfectly. “She ate a hot dog, had a good time, and then wound up saying one of the five top lines in movie history in the AFI,” Rob humorously recalled. Outside of the movie spotlight, Estelle was a renowned jazz singer.
Carl was a Legend on Screen & Behind the Camera
GettyCarl Reiner generally needs no introduction. As Wion News reported, his show business career kicked into high gear with the creation of “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” and his fame only rose from there. As an actor, he took on 101 roles, working steadily until he passed away in 2020. One of his most memorable recent roles was as Saul Bloom in the Ocean’s film series.
However, Carl’s gifts for comedy and drama weren’t limited to on-screen appearances. The comedian also worked as a director, giving fans classics such as “The Jerk” and “Fatal Instinct.” He was also a four-time Emmy winner for his writing work, making him a true jack-of-all-trades in Hollywood.
