Fans have many thoughts about “The Office” going downhill after Steve Carell, who played Michael Scott, left the show. But Jenna Fischer, who played Pam Beesly, disagrees. She told David Spade and Dana Carvey on their “Fly on the Wall” podcast that some of her “favorite episodes were in Seasons 8 and 9 after Steve had left.”
Rainn Wilson, who played Scott’s sidekick, Dwight Schrute, recently chatted with Josh Peck and Ben Soffer on their “Good Guys” podcast. While he didn’t say whether he agrees with Fischer’s opinion, he spoke extensively about how Carell’s departure disrupted the show.
Rainn Wilson Speaks Out on ‘Chaotic’ Transition After Carell’s Exit
“When Steve [Carell] left, it was a little bit chaotic, of trying to figure out the tone of the show,” Wilson said.” And who’s the lead, and how are we telling these stories without, you know, the comic engine of the show, which is Michael Scott.” And without one of the greatest comic actors in American history at the center of our show. So that was also a struggle.”
“We knew it was coming for a long time,” Wilson said. “He was such a big movie star at the time. ” I mean, he was doing — God, I don’t know how many millions of dollars he was getting for these big, giant movies. But he was doing, like, [‘The Incredible] Burt Wonderstone” and these big comedies.”
He goes on to talk about how Carell’s movies were playing in “2000 theaters at the multiplex, so of course he’s going to leave “The Office” when he can.”
“That was definitely a struggle to find the tone of the show without Steve,” he added.
Some ‘The Office’ Stars Are Open to a Cameo In Spin-Off Series
With “The Office” spin-off, “The Paper,” getting closer to its September premiere date, many fans of the original series are wondering if any of our favorite Dunder Mifflin Paper Company characters are appearing. While we know Oscar Nuñez is reprising his role as Ãscar MartÃnez, the future of many others is uncertain.
John Krasinski, who played the lovable Jim Halpert, would love to. When asked by People if he’d make an appearance, he enthusiastically responded, “Done! If they ask me, I’m in.”
Angela Kinsey and Fischer both visited the new set, but haven’t said if they’ll make any cameos. Carell, unsurprisingly, confirmed that Michael Scott will not be appearing on “The Paper.”
âI will be watching but I will not be showing up,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.” “Itâs just a new thing and thereâs really no reason for my character to show up in something like that.â
